Thieves hit Salvation Army store
By Arthur McLean Editor

Thieves have broken into more Thomasville businesses. Two weeks after a burglary at Dunn's Sports, thieves have hit a local clothing store and the Salvation Army store.

Lee's Kloset on Hwy. 43 was burglarized Friday night, with thieves stealing numerous clothing items.

Also on Friday night, the safe was stolen from the Salvation Army store in downtown Thomasville.

"I couldn't believe it," said Marty Lynn, store manager for the Salvation Army and the first person to discover the safe was missing.

The thieves pried open a steel door on the side of the building and went straight for the small safe located in the office of Elaine Smith. There, from the debris on the floor, it appeared to employees that the thieves tried to open the safe there in the store.

When that was apparently unsuccessful, they carried the safe back out of the store, dropping it several times because of its weight. "You could see where they sat it down each time, heading back out of the store," Lynn said.

The thieves didn't get much if they were able to get the safe open, Smith said. Some petty cash and the cash kept for making change - less than $200 in all. There were also papers and register keys in the safe.

"We'd at least like those returned," Smith said. "If they would just put them in a bag and drop them off like a donation, it would really help. We just want our paperwork back."

The theft comes just before the Salvation Army begins its annual kettle fundraising drive. "It hurts us, but it doesn't just hurt the Salvation Army, it's taking from the people we help, from the less fortunate," Smith said.

"We're going into our biggest fundraising season and we're already behind."
