Water rates go up The Clarke County Commission voted Tuesday to increase the rates for water use for customers of the county water system. The proposal for the increase came from Jack Greer, county utilities superintendent, and is being made "due to the increase in operational costs and also an increase in water rates charged by three different suppliers." The rates will be effective Oct. 10 and include minimum cost of $17-per-month for zero to 2,000 gallons, an additional $3.25-per-1,000 for 2,001 to 10,000 gallons, $3-per-1,000 for 10,001 to 20,000 gallons, and $2.80-per-$1,000 for over 20,000 gallons. Rates for water provided to the county by the Grove Hill Water Department had just been increased a few weeks ago. This is the first county water increase since March 2003, Greer said. Before that, an increase was approved in 1994.
In other action from commission meetings this week, an "Employee Recognition Fund" was established at the urging of Commissioner Elma Averett. The fund will finance the county holding an annual dinner to honor retiring employees.
