Afterthoughts
Ready or not, here I come
Anne Williamson
Iremember as a teenager reading the book Gone With The Wind. I had a hard time struggling through those first few chapters, but the deeper I got into it, and the more the plot thickened, I just couldn't put it down.

When it aired on TV, I stayed glued to the screen. We didn't have cable then, only Channels 3, 5 and 10. I don't think there was any such thing as cable when I was a little girl. And it if you missed a movie when it aired on one of the three major networks, there was no watching it again in a day or two. Oh, no! You had just missed it until the next year at least.

One of my favorite characters on the screen version of the 1939 movie was Butterfly McQueen who played Prissy. Remember when the Yankees had come into Atlanta and the town was burning all around? Scarlett and Prissy weren't able to leave because they had to help Miss Melanie deliver her baby. Prissy's famous lines at that point were, "Lawzy, we got to have a doctor. I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies."

That's what I can only imagine my nephew-in-law saying last Friday night.

My niece, who was due to deliver their third baby on the 23rd, really didn't think it was time for the latest addition of their family to arrive. But the expectant parents went ahead and took their three and fouryear olds over to his aunt's house and headed out on the 50-mile drive to the hospital.

Now I've gotten the accounts of this story from my mother and my sister (my niece's mother), so forgive me if it isn't exactly correct, but it is close enough.

The daddy, who is on the local volunteer fire department, began to realize they were going to have the baby sooner than either of them had anticipated. About 20 minutes into the drive to the hospital he decided (upon his wife's insistence) it was time to pull over and use his fire radio to call dispatch and summon an ambulance.

A friend-of-a-friend heard his call for help go out on the fire radio. The friend then called another friend where the mother-to-be's little sister was visiting. The little sister then called her mother (my sister) to tell her what had been heard on the police scanner.

The ambulance arrived, met the young couple and off they went, lights and sirens, heading to the hospital.

The good news is little Miss Isabella Faith "Bella" waited until arriving at the hospital before she made her debut - her mom was there for about ONE MINUTE.

After receiving the phone call about the overheard emergency request for an ambulance, my sister immediately left her house rushing to the hospital. On her arrival "Grandma" was greeted by her newest grandbaby who was beautiful and perfect in every way - and by her daughter, who after a more exciting delivery than she had ever anticipated, was doing fine and already eating a hamburger.

Welcome to the world Bella. Even though I know you had lots of fun watching Mommy and Daddy get all flustered on your birthday, please try to slow down just a little now that you're here.
