The Sweet Water Bulldogs played both the Brantley Bulldogs and the Maplesville Red Devils in a half of pre-season football this past Friday, August 24. The three team competition was held in Maplesville with a format that called for the varsities of each team to play 16 of the 24 minutes of each half and the Junior Varsity to play the final eight minutes.

In their first half of competition Sweet Water tied up with the Brantley Bulldogs and came away with a 14 - 0 win in the varsity portion of the game and 0 - 0 tie in the junior varsity segment.

In the varsity action with Brantley, Sweet Water scored both of their touchdowns in the first quarter with the first one coming on a two yard plunge by Anthony Landrum with 5:19 remaining on the clock. Scottie Nelson added the extra point and Sweet Water was on top 7 - 0. The scoring run culminated a 65 yard drive by the Bulldogs.

The second score happened almost exactly three minutes later when Drew Luker connected with Antonio Landrum on a 23 yard pass play with 2:18 left on the clock. Once again Nelson was on the mark with the extra-point and the Bulldogs had extended their lead to 14 - 0. The scoring drive this time covered 45 yards.

That's the way things would wind up with not only the Sweet Water offense being dominant but the defense taking charge as well. On offense Sweet Water piled up 149 total yards in a quarter and a half with 72 coming on the ground on 14 attempts and 77 through the air ways as Drew Luker was 4 of 8 passing. The defense meanwhile held Brantley to only one first down and a minus nine yards rushing.

In their second contest of the night the Bulldogs lost to the host Maplesville Red Devils 14 - 6 in the varsity portion of the game and then won the junior varsity segment 14 - 0.

Things appeared to be going the Bulldog's way early in the first quarter of their match-up with Maplesville as they took their first offensive possession and drove 65 yards for a score. It was Anthony Landrum again who picked up the touchdown, this time racing in from 27 yards out with 7:24 left on the first quarter clock. Nelson's extra-point attempt failed but the Bulldogs were out front 6 - 0.

The tide turned on the Bulldogs shortly after that however when a muffed punt at the Bulldog 25 yard line gave Maplesville the ball deep in Sweet Water territory. From there the Red Devils scored on a 23 yard run. The extra-point was good and with 4:48 to play in the first quarter Maplesville led 7 - 6.

The Red Devils' other score came early in the second quarter when they pushed it across from one yard out after they had moved the ball down the field with three consecutive pass completions that covered 73 yards. The extra-point was again good making the final 14 - 6 in favor of the home standing Maplesville squad.

In the varsity action with Maplesville the Bulldog offense had 125 total yards of offense, racking up 91 yards on 14 attempts on the ground and picking up 34 through the air as Drew Luker was 2 for 3. The defense on the other hand held the Red Devils to only 13 yards rushing but gave up 82 through the air.

In the junior varsity portion of the contest with Maplesville, Chris Landrum scored both touchdowns for the Bulldogs in the 14 - 0 win.

Evaluating the Bulldogs' efforts in the pre-season action Sweet Water Coach Stacy Luker had praise for his charges on both sides of the ball. "I thought our defense, other than giving up some big plays, played well overall. Up front we dominated the line of scrimmage and got a lot of pressure on the quarterback. As for the offense, I thought we were very physical up front and moved the ball real well. We had 14 first downs in two halves of action and only one turnover. That's pretty good in anybody's book."

With the pre-season game under their belt the Bulldogs turn their attention to their season opener this week with traditional rival Thomasville. The game, besides pitting the number 1 ranked 1A Bulldogs against the number 2 ranked 4A Tigers will take on special significance as one of the televised AHSAA Challenge of Champions games for 2007. "We are excited about our game with Thomasville this week, "Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "Besides it being our opener and against Thomasville, we believe both programs are going to get some good exposure because it is being televised on the AHSAA Sports Network."

"As usual Thomasville has a great team and we will have to be at our best to play with them. Their defense is extremely quick and they run to the ball as well or better than anybody we'll see all year."

The Bulldogs host the Tigers at Nolan Atkins Stadium Thursday, August 30, with kick off set for 7:00 PM.
