Another business break-in
By Arthur McLean Editor

Kathy Roberts shows where theives broke in at her business, Finding Balance Day Spa in downtown Thomasville.
There was another downtown break-in over the holiday weekend. Thieves broke into the tanning room Finding Balance Day Spa, located on West Second Street late Sunday night.

They broke in through a small window and managed to crawl into the room over a window unit air conditioner. Once inside, they were able to unlock a door the outside and then attempted to steel the business' tanning bed.

But the bed's bulk and 600 lb. weight made it too big and heavy for the thieves to get the bed out of the door.

David Roberts, husband of Kathy Roberts discovered the break-in Monday morning. The Roberts own the set of businesses at the corner lot which includes day spa, a patio and grill store and a coffee shop.

"David called me and said I wasn't going to believe what happened," Kathy Roberts said. The door to the room was open and about one foot of the tanning bed was sitting outside the door, the rest of it was still in the room, Roberts said.

"They had to be small to get in through that window," Roberts said gesturing to the plywood covering the opening where the window was broken out.

Roberts said she and her husband will be taking extra precautions to protect the equipment and supplies at the day spa.

The break-in at Finding Balance follows other break-ins in the area, including one at the Salvation Army store on Wilson Avenue a week before.

The break-ins have become cause for concern, especially for Roberts.

"As incoming chairwoman of the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce, I'm going to try to get something started with the businesses and the city to cooperate and try to do something about these break-ins," Roberts said. "I want us to work closely with businesses, the police and the city to stop this and support each other."

The nature of the break-ins has led to a lot of speculation around town about the people who might be doing the break-ins.

Roberts is confident that whoever it is will be caught soon. "I firmly believe that what goes around comes around."
