Gatlin named new Thomasville Nursing Home administrator
By Arthur McLean Editor

Diane Gatlin
Diane Gatlin has been named the new administrator at Thomasville Nursing Home.

Gatlin took over as the interim administrator after Charlie Phillips left the position on May of this year.

Prior to taking the position, Gatlin was overseeing the accounting operations at the nursing home.

She was asked by the board about taking the position of interim administrator and she agreed to a trial period.

"I wanted to see if it was something I really wanted to do and if everyone was happy with it," she said. "I like the position and I love the people here. I've been overwhelmed with support and the unity of our employees is wonderful."

Gatlin is a 29-year veteran of the nursing home, having started out there as an accounts receivable clerk after graduating with a degree in accounting. She has a husband Rick and a son Logan.

Though she's still getting organized, Gatlin said she wants to keep some of her old job responsibilities while taking on new roles.

"For the last 10 years, I've been responsible for the finances at Thomasville Nursing Home and I will stay very involved in that part of it," she said. "But I want to branch out and get more involved in the community. I see the nursing home as belonging to the people and I want to stay on top of what the citizens want for their nursing home."

Gatlin said she will also maintain the nursing home's commitment to staying on top of new technology and new trends in nursing home care to provide better care for the residents there. "We want to be the best we can be," she said.

The nursing home has 80 beds and it stays full. If the Southwest Alabama Medical Center moves to a new building, there is a possibility of expanding, but nothing is certain at this point. However, the possibility of expanding into the former hospital space is exciting Gatlin said.

Currently, the nursing home employs approximately 120 people.

"I'm really looking forward to getting more involved in the community and we would love to see the community and nursing home more involved with each other, we love to get our residents involved and of course, we're always looking for volunteers here," Gatlin said.

With her grandmother and father as residents, it's given Gatlin a new perspective on nursing home care, she said, and realizing what contributions the people there made to the town raises her respect. "It kind of opens your eyes when you have family here. But I look at the people here, and realize these people built Thomasville, they made it what it is today, it makes me proud to think of what they contributed to this community."
