OUR VIEW HLike many small towns in Alabama, Thomasville enjoys a low crime level. That's thanks in part to the efforts of our police department. But unless we're willing to pay to have a police officer on every corner there's still going to be crimes and thefts. The recent uptick in burglaries around Thomasville set against our low crime level certainly raises eyebrows. It stands in greater relief because we enjoy the relative safety of the small town. But the days of leaving the front door unlocked are over. It may just be an odd occurrence and it may be that things will soon return to normal once the theives are apprehended. But as Thomasville grows, one can naturally expect the numbers of crimes to increase as well, even if the amount of crime per capita stays low. So maybe it's time we as a populace tried to take a more active role. Maybe business owners in town should work more closely with our police and with each other to protect our businesses that provide jobs in this town.
It's an idea that will be brought up in the future for the chamber to consider, and it may be an idea who's time has come for Thomasville.
