19th century Clarke County woman's letters donated The Davidson family in May 2007 donated to the John C. Payne Special Collections facility of the Bounds Law Library a collection of Materials assembled by Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Davidson Mobley, a 19th century resident of Clarke County. The collection consists of more than 250 items of correspondence and other documents, including a variety of printed, handwritten and typescript materials. The correspondence dates from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century, with strong concentrations of letters from the Civil War era and the late 19th century. In addition, the collection contains poetry, recipes, cards, invoices and other records. Betty Davidson Mobley, for whom the collection is named, was born Jan. 13, 1857, near Opine and died in 1954. "Aunt Betty" was the seventh of nine children born to Samuel Pegues Davidson and Judith Kilpatrick Davidson. Judith Davidson was the daughter of Alexander Kirkpatrick of Woods Bluff. Betty Davidson married Docton Alan (Doc) Mobley. With their son, Ormonde O'Neil Mobley, they lived in Campbell. Her descendant, Bill Davidson, has said that, "Aunt Betty had a lifelong interest in history and family relations." "It was," he said, "her oftstated desire that her collection of family documents be placed where they would be available for students of Alabama history." The Betty Davidson Mobley Collection will allow historians and genealogists to view the history of Clarke County in regional context. In general these materials provide researchers with a window into the life of an Alabama family living through times that were both turbulent and fascinating.
