Spiritual Reflections
Jesus knew Lancer before Lancer knew Jesus
Pat Ozment Jr. IMB Missionary to Ghana

He is not very tall for a man, though I have seen him in shorts, with no shirt, working in his corn field, and he is powerfully put together. He is not well educated, but that has not prevented a high level of intelligence. He is not given to idleness. He is a tireless worker as the caretaker at the seminary, and at our compound, still finding the time and energy to put in an acre of corn with a short handled hoe, and replanting when the drought got it. He does whatever we ask him with a smile. From the first, I became aware that Joseph Lancer is not just a care taker, he is a care giver. He has adopted us, and has assumed responsibility for our well being. He watches over us and our property. He sees to it that we are not cheated when we make purchases. He advises, cautions and warns when needed and I have full confidence in what he says.

If we need something done "Lancer," as we call him, is who we turn to. When we travel in our truck, we must call and let him know that we have arrived, and when we start our journey home we must let him know that we are on the way, and if we are late arriving our cell phone will ring and Lancer will ask, "where are you?"

When we get ready for church on Sunday morning, someone has washed our truck. Lancer is not, "our man." We are his.

Lancer and his wife have eight children with an age span of over 20 years. They have four grandchildren. I have watched him up close with his family for they live less than 100 feet behind us.

I have not heard him raise his voice, or, seen any show of anger, except when the sheep eat his corn.

If you perceive that I have a high regard for Joseph Lancer you are correct. We could not have stayed here without his help. Lancer is a follower of Jesus, who came from a background of traditional African religion and Islam. Yes, he knows Jesus, and if you have read Matthew 5:3-13 you know that Jesus knew Lancer, before Lancer knew Him. Lancer is the "salt of the earth. "Be salty and I'll see you in church
