Marengo starts 1-0
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

James Dumas scrambles from pressure for Marengo Friday night.
The Marengo High School Panthers played host to the Hornets of John Essex High School this past Friday, August 31, in the season opener for both teams. When the final whistle had blown at "The Swamp" the Panthers had emerged from the battle between the cross - county rivals with a 19 - 6 win.

Leading the charge on offense for the Panthers, who racked up 241 of their 284 yards of total offense on the ground, was Donte Packer with 124 yards on 18 carries. Following him was Quintin Watkins with 54 yards on seven carries and Ontarrio Woods with 36 yards on five carries. In the air James Bennett was 1 for 4 for 43 yards with Michael Watkins having the one reception for 43 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball the Panthers were led by Kalos Pritchett with 11 tackles, Larrence Pritchett and Ontarrio Woods with 10 tackles each and Michael Watkins with eight. Corey Noid also had a pass interception for the Panthers.

In the game the Panthers got on the scoreboard first when Quintin Watkins scampered in from 12 yards out for a touchdown with 3:00 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The extra- point attempt failed but Marengo was on top 6 - 0.

The score remained the same throughout the balance of the first half as neither team could seem to sustain anything.

Early in the third quarter Donte Packer rambled 15 yards for the Panthers second touchdown of the evening. Marcus Richardson tacked on the extra point and the Panthers had extended their lead to 13 - 0 with 9:06 remaining in the period.

The Hornets drew within seven at the 3:00 minute mark of the third quarter when they struck pay dirt. Their two point conversion attempt failed leaving the Panthers on top 13 - 6.

The score would remain that way until late in the final period when Panther quarterback James Dumas sneaked into the end zone from one yard out to increase the lead to 19 - 6. The extra point attempt failed making the final 19 - 6.

Panther Head Coach Scottie Jones, who was happy to see his squad get the season started right with a win, was complimentary of his staff and players. "I thought our offensive line did a good job of opening up the holes for our running game and our backs hit them," Jones said. "On the defensive side of the ball, I thought we played extremely well. Coach Pritchett and Coach Brown have worked hard with our kids all fall putting in our defensive schemes and the players put into practice what they have been taught."

Although Jones was happy with the win he knows there is little time to revel in it, because the Panthers start regional play this week against another set of felines when the travel to Coffeeville to play the Panthers from west Clarke County.

"Even though I thought we played well overall against John Essex, we still have a lot of work to do," Coach Jones said. "We had some critical mistakes that hurt us including penalties that caused two touchdowns to be called back. We can't afford to have that happen this week. Also we will need to avoid any turnovers, we were fortunate in that area last week in that we recovered those we lost the handle on."

As for the Coffeeville Panthers, Coach Jones expects them to be big and athletic as usual. Add in playing them on the road and there is another dimension to the game. The kickoff for the game is set for 7:00 PM.
