Bulldogs trounce Akron
Leading the Bulldog rushing attack, that accumulated 501 yards, was Anthony Landrum with 118 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Following him was Chris Landrum with 93 yards and one touchdown on seven carries and Johnny Lockett with 62 yards and a touchdown on four carries. In the air quarterback Drew Luker was 7 for 10 for 115 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. On the defensive side of the ball the Bulldogs were led by the trio of Delano Brewer, Johnny Lockett and Devin Wolf with five tackles each. Lockett was also credited with two sacks while Antonio Landrum picked off two Ram passes.
The Rams answered the Bulldogs with a score of their own with 4:24 to play in the first quarter when the quarterback and wide receiver connected on a 40 yard pass play. The two point conversion attempt failed but the Rams had cut the Sweet Water lead to 8 - 6. Sweet Water took less than a minute to extend their lead following the Ram touchdown. This time the Bulldog points came through the air waves with Drew Luker hitting Antonio Landrum with an 11 yard scoring strike. Anthony Landrum blasted in from three yards out with the two point conversion and the Bulldogs led 16 - 6 with 3:35 remaining in the first period. The Bulldog offense was not done in the first quarter scoring again with 2:19 showing on the clock on an 18 yard scamper by Anthony Landrum. Drew Luker hit Anthony Landrum with a two yard pass for the two point conversion and Sweet Water led 24 - 6. With the defense playing lights out the second quarter belonged to the Bulldog offense as well. Anthony Landrum got a 28 point scoring spree started at the 11:50 mark of the second period when he blasted his way into the end zone from seven yards out. Scottie Nelson tacked on the extra-point and the Bulldogs had extended their lead to 31 - 6. Damaraquis Williams got in on the act next pounding his way into the end zone from five yards out for another Sweet Water touchdown. Nelson was on the mark with the extra-point and the Bulldog lead stood at 38 - 6 with 7:08 to play in the second period. Johnny Lockett was the next member of the stable of Bulldog backs to pick up a touchdown rambling 34 yards to pay dirt with 3:34 showing on the second quarter clock. Nelson split the uprights again with the extra-point and Sweet Water had increased their lead to 45 - 6. The Bulldogs added one more touchdown just before the close of the first half when Drew Luker hooked up with tight end Scottie Nelson on 35 yard pass play with 1:57 to play before intermission. Nelson completed the first half barrage by knocking the extra-point through, giving the Bulldogs a 52 - 6 lead as the teams retired to the locker rooms for half time. As the second half began the Sweet Water starters were replaced by some of the younger Bulldogs on the roster. That group let the Bulldog faithful know that the future of the Sweet Water football team was in good hands as they continued to put the pressure on the Rams on both sides of the ball. The youngsters added to the lead with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter when Chris Landrum bulled his way into the end zone from one yard out. Jeremy Landrum added the two point conversion and Sweet Water's lead stood at 60 - 6. The Bulldog offense scored again with 2:04 remaining in the third period when Randy Jackson dove in from one yard out. Desmond Bouler ran in the two point conversion and Sweet Water was on top 68 - 6. The final period began much like the first three quarters with the Bulldogs in control and adding to their lead. Jeremy Landrum accounted for the final Sweet Water score with 9:23 to play in the game. Nelson kicked the extra-point and the Bulldogs were out front 75 - 6. The Rams did manage to finish on somewhat of a positive note scoring a touchdown with 1:17 to play in the game on a 99 yard pass play. The two point conversion was good making the final 75 - 14. Bulldog Head Coach Stacy Luker praised his Bulldogs for taking care of business like they should. "I was proud of the effort of our team against Akron," the Bulldog Skipper said. "I thought we came out and took care of business early against the Rams and in so doing removed any doubt. It was a good region win for us." Looking ahead to this week the 2 - 0 Bulldogs will be traveling to Newbern to take on the Sunshine Tigers who are 1 - 1 on the season having defeated Livingston in week one of the season before losing to Linden last week. It will be the second region game for both teams with the Bulldogs 1 - 0 in region play while the Tigers are 0 - 1. In some respects the Bulldogs are all too familiar with the Tigers having met them twice last year, once during the regular season and once in the quarter finals of the state playoffs. "The Sunshine Tigers are pretty much like they always are," Stacy Luker said. "They are big and very athletic. You might say they are scary because they can score from any point on the field. They have a quarterback who is a four year starter and he can literally throw the ball 70 yards."
The game which was originally scheduled for Thursday, September 13, has been changed to Friday, September 14, with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
