Marengo defeats C'ville 18-0
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Marengo High School Panthers traveled to Coffeeville this past Thursday, September 6 and defeated the Coffeeville Panthers 18 - 0 in the first regional game for both teams. The team from south Marengo County relied on a bone hard defense and a strong rushing attack to get the job done with 260 yards of their 272 total yards coming on the ground.

Leading the rushing attack for the Marengo Panthers was Michael Watkins with 162 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Donte Packer followed him with 65 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries. In the air quarterback James Bennett was 1 for 3 for 12 yards with Michael Watkins being on the receiving end of Bennett's lone completion.

Over on the defensive side of the ball Kaylos Pritchett led the Panthers with 17 tackles followed by Larrence Pritchett with 15 stops and Devante Lewis with nine.

In the game both teams came up empty in the first quarter with the defenses from both squads setting the tone. As the second quarter rolled around the Marengo Panthers scored the first of three touchdowns they would garner during the game. Donte Packer got his team on the score board plunging in from one yard out. The extrapoint attempt failed but the Panthers had taken a 6 - 0 that they would take to locker room as the firs half came to a close.

The third quarter was much like the first in that neither team was able to turn an offensive series into points. In the fourth quarter however the Marengo offense got things going again and struck pay dirt twice. Michael Watkins picked up the first touchdown early in the quarter, barreling in from seven yards out. The extra-point attempt failed but Marengo led 12 - 0 at that point. It was Michael Watkins crossing the goal line again later in the quarter for the final score of the evening, blasting his way this time from five yards out. Once again the extra-point was no good but Marengo had upped their lead to 18 - 0.

That's the way it would remain with the Marengo Panthers not only recording their second win of the season but more importantly picking up their first regional win as well.

After the game, Marengo Head Coach Scottie Jones was complimentary of his defense once again. "I thought our defense played very well," Coach Jones said. "We kept them in check all night giving our offense time to get untracked. I was particularly pleased that we shut them out." Jones also had some favorable comments about his offensive troops. "I thought our backs ran well and our offensive line continued to show some improvement," the Coach said. "We are not where we need to be yet but we are giving the effort and making progress every week."

On the docket next for Marengo is another regional battle as the J. F. Shields Panthers pay a visit to "The Swamp". As Coach Jones and his staff have looked at J. F. Shields several things have come across the radar. "We know that J. F. Shields will be big and athletic as usual," Scottie Jones said. "It is also likely they will put eight or nine in the box to stop our running game. Consequently we are expecting to have to pass the ball more often this week to open things up some."

The clash between Marengo and J. F. Shields is scheduled for this Friday, September 14, in Dixons Mills with the kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
