AREA CALENDAR Historical society meeting The Clarke County Historical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Grove Hill Methodist Church fellowship hall. Speaker for the meeting will be Marilyn Culpeper, who grew up in Grove Hill and is now the executive director of the Mobile Historic Preservation Society. The Mobile Historic Preservation Society, founded in 1935, operates and maintains the Oakleigh Historic Complex. Please note the date is one week earlier than the regular meeting date. The public is invited to the meeting. Red Cross blood drive The American Red Cross will hold the Thomasville Community Harold Spinks Memorial Blood Drive from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, at 120 Old Highway 5 North in Thomasville. Donors will receive a free T-shirt and will be entered to win two roundtrip Delta Air Lines International tickets. Please bring photo ID. Retired educators meeting The Clarke County Retirees Education Association will hold its first meeting of the 2007-2008 year, at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Jackson Steakhouse in Jackson. All education retirees, teachers, support personnel, active, inactive and associate members are cordially invited to attend and join the association. Associate members are any person interested in the purpose of the association. Membership dues are $10 per year. Wilma G. Day is president of the association. VFW, auxiliary meetings VFW Post 5106 and its Ladies Auxiliary will have their regular monthly meetings at 7 p.m., Sept. 24. All members are urged to come to this important meeting. Law officers will be stressing enforcement and ticketing offenders during this time. Keep an eye on litter. Don't add to it. Don't toss it. Don't let it fly off your truck. Pick it up. Bereavement ceremony Hometown Hospice of Camden, Inc. has scheduled a bereavement ceremony at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Dunklin and Daniels Chapel on the Camden Bypass to recognize and honor the lives of its patients who have passed away. All family and friends of the loved ones who passed away in 2005 and 2006 are invited. For more information call 682-4400. BWWMH jewelry sale The $5 Jewelry Sale returns to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital's classroom (in Demopolis) Oct. 4 and 5 just in time for Christmas shopping. Sponsored by the BWWMH Auxiliary, the event has become one of their most popular fundraisers as shoppers take advantage of the incredible $5 price for costume jewelry of all types. Everything from rings to necklaces will be on sale during the event when shopping hours will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Story hour at the library The Thomasville Public Library has openings in the story hour programs for threeyear olds and students in the Kfourth grade classes. Threeyear olds' (Reading Bees) story hour is held each Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Kfourth graders (Dragonflies) meet from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., each Tuesday. These programs require registration, so anyone interested is asked to come by the library. AL-ANON Meets AL-ANON meets every Thursday night at 6:30 at Pineview Baptist Church (enter door at Moore Street entrance behind church). For more information call 636-9985. Homework assignments Thomasville Middle School and Thomasville High School homework assignments are posted by all teachers each week. They are published by 4 p.m. every Monday for that week. 24th Peterman Station The 24th annual Peterman Station Arts and Crafts Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, in downtown Peterman, six miles north of Monroeville. Booths are still available at $45 without electricity and $50 with electricity. Black Belt Musical Tour
ArtsRevive and the Selma LINKS have partnered with the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts to present the Dallas County Black Belt Musical Tour, on Thursday September 27, at 7 p.m. This concert will be held at the Pickard Auditorium, located at the School of Discovery, 400 Washington Avenue. This community based concert will depict the era of gospel music from its origin to the present. This high impact, soul stirring, energetic performance will feature the talented students of Selma High's choral department and special guests, Montgomery's own Cinque Cullar and the Tribe of Judah. Come witness performing arts at its best. Tickets are available at the Centre for Commerce, Selma Public Library, and Truax & Co. Tickets in advance are $5 for adults and $3 for students and at the door are $7 for adults and $3 for students.
