From the Editor's Desk How do they know? There are copies of the metal cylinder around the world, and they are flown in every so often to compare to the original. I had no idea there was an official kilogram. I wonder if there's an official pound out there under guard in some high security installation. I bet there's a lot of folks here in the states who would like to get their hands on that sucker. I've tried the losing weight by laying around and doing nothing thing. Hasn't worked for me yet, but I do have another 80 something years to try. Of course, the official kilogram has only lost 50 microgram against the other official kilograms around the world. So, I'd better try something else to get the pounds off. There could be an untapped super geeky tourism industry ready to be born. Travel the world and see the original weights and measures! Television I don't watch a lot of television, but someone has had me watching most of the Big Brother reality show on CBS this summer. It's the eighth season for the show and my first of watching it. I honestly can't say how I'd act if I were to be on it, but watching that show doesn't exactly reaffirm one's faith in humanity. Of course, editing has a lot to do with anything you see on television, so I'm not going to pass summary judgment on the folks I watched. But with all the back door evictions that happened, I wouldn't be letting any of them pack my bags for my next flight. Fossett The outlook doesn't seem hopeful at this point for finding pilot Steve Fossett. Fossett circled the globe solo in a balloon and recently made the first solo, non-stop flight around the world in a jet airplane.
What surprised me was that he set another 113 world records, and currently holds five! That's pretty amazing. And his loss I'm sure is impacting many many people.
