Lady Tigers fall to 5-6
The action started on Tuesday, September 11, when they traveled to Atmore to take on the Lady Blue Devils of Escambia County High School in a best three out of five match. It took all five games to decide the match with Thomasville claiming the first and third games 25 - 8 and 25 - 13 but falling to the homestanding Lady Blue Devils 25 - 16, 25 - 19 and 15 - 11 in the other three. Leading the charge in the match for the Lady Tigers were: Twarner Witherspoon with 11 spikes, three aces and nine tips; Nicole Washington with four spikes, one ace and 12 tips; Shelby Crawford with three spikes, one ace, four blocks, and seven tips; and setter Rachel Norris with 39 assists, three aces and 11 tips. The Lady Tigers next played host to the Lady Tigers from Monroe County in a best 3 out of 5 match on Thursday, September 13. The Thomasville Ladies won this one in three straight games 25 - 19, 25 - 17 and 25 - 19. Leading the way for Thomasville in the match were: Twarner Witherspoon with five spikes, two aces, and 13 tips; Shelby Crawford with two spikes, two blocks, and three tips; Nicole Washington with two spikes, one ace, and seven tips; and setter Rachel Norris with 20 assists and four tips. The Lady Tigers ended the week participating in the Clarke County High School tournament played in Grove Hill on Saturday, September 15. The Lady Tigers were in a pool that included Leroy, Mobile Christian and Monroe County. All of their matches in round robin pool play were the best 2 out of 3 games. The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with the Lady Leopards from Mobile Christian and fell to them in two straight games 25 - 20 and 25 - 18. Lady Tiger leaders in the match were: Twarner Witherspoon with seven spikes, one ace, and 12 tips; Shelby Crawford with three spikes, three blocks and four tips; Olivia Washington with three spikes, two aces and five tips; and setter Rachel Norris with 16 assists, one ace and three tips. In the second match of the day the Thomasville Ladies defeated the Monroe County Ladies in two straight games 25 - 19 and 25 - 20. Setting the pace for Thomasville in the match were: Twarner Witherspoon with 10 spikes, three aces, three blocks and six tips; Nicole Washington with two spikes, one ace and four tips; Katie Simon with one spike, one block and two tips; and setter Rachel Norris with 15 assists, five aces and six tips. The Lady Bears from Leroy ended the Lady Tigers tournament participation taking two straight games from them in their final match in pool play 25 - 6 and 25 - 15. Lady Tiger leaders in the match were: Twarner Witherspoon with three spikes, two aces, and six tips; Shelby Meyers with two spikes, one block and four tips; Nicole Washington with two tips, one ace, one assist and four tips; and setter Rachel Norris with 14 assists and two tips. With the Lady Tigers near the mid point of their season Coach LaTonya Woods believes the best times are ahead for her squad. "The girls are certainly capable of doing a better job than we have done thus far," Coach Woods said. "They are a very talented bunch with a lot of potential but at this point we haven't shown the mental toughness it takes to win on a consistent basis. We always seem to start off great but don't finish like we need to. I believe some of that comes with experience and the more we play the better we will be."
After a week off the Lady Tigers are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday, September 25, when they travel to Grove Hill to take on Clarke County. They will follow that match with a trip to Jackson on Thursday, September 27.
