Bulldogs, TMS battle to a tie
In the game, Sweet Water won the toss and elected to defer to the second half giving Thomasville the ball first. Starting off at their own 30 yard line the Tigers saw the Bulldogs get the first break of the game when Sweet Water linebacker Linc Luker intercepted a third down pass at the Thomasville 39 giving the Bulldogs excellent field position with 6:28 to play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs didn't waste the opportunity, driving down and scoring on a seven yard run by Derrious Rogers with 3:24 to play in the first quarter. The two point conversion attempt failed but Sweet Water was on top 6 - 0. The Tigers responded on their next possession when John Knight skirted right end and raced 72 yards to pay dirt. Tyler Hayes barreled in from three yards out to add the two point conversion and TMS had taken the lead 8 - 6 with 2:12 to play in the first period. It looked for a moment as though the Bulldogs would get on the scoreboard again early in the second period but a drive that had them in the shadow of the Thomasville goal line ended at the 6:42 mark with a fumble that the Tigers recovered at the three. The elation on the Tiger sideline didn't last long however as the Bulldog defense trapped a Tiger runner in the end zone for a safety with 5:06 to play in the second quarter, tying the score at 8 - 8. Following the free kick the Bulldogs were pounding their way into Tiger territory again but just like before a fumble thwarted the drive giving the Tigers the ball back at their 20 yard line. After a loss on first down and a penalty that had the Tigers snapping the ball at their 16, the Tiger offense came up with another big play to regain the lead. This time the touchdown came on a Hunter Jackson to Monterrio Evans pass that covered 84 yards. The two point conversion attempt fell short but TMS led 14 - 8 with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard again midway the final period when Ryan Preston plunged in from four yards out with 5:26 to play in the game. The Tiger defense stopped the two point conversion attempt just short of the goal line leaving the game tied at 14 - 14. Although both teams moved the ball some after that, neither squad was able to score again leaving the game deadlocked.
Both teams have a few days off before their next game with the Bulldogs slated to travel to Linden on Saturday, September 29, to take on the Linden Middle School Patriots and the Tigers scheduled to host the Wilson Hall Bulldogs on Monday, October 1.
