OBITUARIES
Mrs. Collier was born May 28, 1946, in Escambia County, Atmore, to the Rev. Paul James McCants and Rubie Mae McCants. She served as an English teacher and librarian with the Wilcox County School System for 34 years. In addition to her classroom duties, she served as Student Council Advisor, newspaper advisor, Library Club advisor, in-service chairperson, curriculum guide advisor and proofreader. In 1998, she received an Award of Exceptional Service from the Library and Media Professional (LAMP) workshop. As a freshman in college she participated in the Selma to Montgomery March. Also in college she was one of the practice teachers used to integrate the faculties of the Montgomery School System. Mrs. Collier received her bachelor of science and master of education degrees from Alabama State University in English and library science. She graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. While at Alabama State University, among her honors, she was the president of the Ollie L. Brown Library Club, Miss English Club of Alabama State University (Miss ECAS), art editor of the yearbook and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Mrs. Collier was a former member of the NAACP, Wilcox County Library Board, Wilcox County Educator Association, AEA, NEA, Alabama Instructional Media Association and deaconess at St. Paul P.B. Church. The funeral was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Pine Hill with O.L. Acoff - church pastor, the Rev. Gregory Bentley and Dr. John L. Dees officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Collier is survived by her husband, Strauter Collier Jr. of Annemanie; two daughters, Ada Lynette (Volconor) Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Alexis Noelle Collier of Montgomery; one son, Xavier Strauter Collier of Normal; her mother, Rubie Mae McCants of Atmore; two sisters, Urla (Frank) Boggan of Atmore and Betty Bradley of Brewton; two brothers, Paul J. (Johnnie) McCants of Charlotte, N.C. and David L. (Regina) McCants of Atmore; two grandsons, Jaydon and Koen Davis of West Palm Beach; one aunt, Blondell Miles of Pensacola; two brothers-inlaw, Ledelle (Antionette) Collier of Philadelphia, Pa. and Milton (Bettie) Collier of Annemanie; five sisters-in-law, Lois (Benjamin) Hudson and Margaret Vaughn of Birmingham, Joyce (Jacob) Ivory of Miami, Fla., Earlene Knight of Montgomery and Dr. Rosie (Carl) Shamburger of Pine Hill; one adopted brotherin law, James (Yvette) Collier of Fairfax, Va.; four aunts-in-law, Emma Collier of Pine Hill, Louise McCants of Atmore, Edna Kimbrough of Birmingham and Roberta Collier of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one great-aunt, Beatrice McCaskill of Lower Peachtree. Christian Memorial Funeral Home in Camden directed. Vella B. Fowler Short Vella B. Fowler Short, 83, of Auburn, died Friday, September 21, 2007, in Monroeville. She was formerly of Thomasville. Graveside service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lineville with Dr. Sam Tate officiating. Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Terrell Short Jr.; and one sister, Lois Fowler Bolt. Mrs. Short is survived by two sons, Robert T. (Shirley) Short Jr. and Ronnie F. (Elaine) Short; two daughters, Ann (Trenton) Agee and Beth (Chuck) Gilpin; one sister, Laventries Fowler Short; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Fredericks Funeral Home of Opelika directed. Derek Michael Stoudenmier Derek Michael Stoudenmier, 28, of Montevallo, died Friday, September 21, 2007, at his home. Mr. Stoudenmier was born March 11, 1979 in Montgomery. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Centreville and was a bank accountant. The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24, at O'Bryant chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville with the Rev. Rod Curry officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill. Mr. Stoudenmier is survived by his parents, Danny Michael Stoudenmier of Catherine and Vanessa Anderson Stephens of Grove Hill; two step-sisters, Tara Reaves of Camden and Serah Stephens of Mobile; one step-brother, Joshua Stephens of Grove Hill; two grandmothers, Gladys Voncile Long of Kimbrough and Willie Mary Agee of Arlington; and his friend and companion, B.J. Jackson of Montevallo. Pallbearers were Jon-David Anderson, Eric Agee, Michael Agee, Rob Barr, Teddy Jackson and David Holder. Honorary pallbearers were Tara Wright and Damesia Crocker.
