Getting a zoom's eye view
From the Editor's Desk
Arthur McLean
Ahandful of games into the football season things are turning out to be pretty interesting.

Thomasville's coming along with the Tigers seeming to get better with every game.

Of course, sometimes it's hard to know exactly how things are going play by play when you're looking at the game through a zoom lens almost all night. That mass of movement to the left? Yeah, that must be where the play's developing. Nope, it's actually going to the right.

Got the perfect spot for the next play? Sure do, and the ref thinks it's a pretty good spot to watch the action too.

Did you get the perfect composition and angle at the perfect height of the action? Yes you did. Oh, but that shot's out of focus. Sorry, maybe next time. I'm glad the fans in the stands are actually watching the players and cheering during those moments. I imagine it probably looks a little odd for everyone on the home team side to be celebrating the great play and there's this one guy on the sideline with a camera who actually looks like he's mad. He is, but it's no one's fault.

Sweet Water is doing its usual thing of blowing out just about everybody, but Friday might be a different story for the Bulldogs. I've heard Leroy's going to come in with a chip on its shoulder after last year's whoopin.

We're getting some great Sweet Water shots from Johnny Autery and his fancy shmancy camera equipment. And yes, I'm jealous.

That's also one of the great things about doing a community newspaper. We don't have a big staff, so it's a blessing when there are folks out there in the community willing to help to make sure their communities get their due.

And I can't leave out the Marengo Panthers. The little school in Dixon's Mills is often caught in the middle between the two larger schools in Thomasville and Sweet Water, but coach Scottie Jones and his staff seem to be doing some good things over there. The Panthers have another team to be reckoned with in their region this season down in the Swamp.

How will it play out? Will the Panthers climb the mountain this year to regain some of their former glory? Will Thomasville avenge its bitter disappointment in Birmingham? Will Sweet Water run off with another state crown? Stay tuned and we'll see.

On a side note. We've expanded the space we dedicate to sports during football season this year, and you, our readers, seem to be responding positively to that. Let me know what you think about that.
