The Sweet Water Bulldogs out gained the visiting Linden Patriots 512 yards to 193 yards on their way to a 56 - 8 win last Friday, September 21. With the win the Bulldogs improved to 4 - 0 on the season and 3 - 0 in region play while the Patriots fell to 3 - 1 over all and 2 - 1 in the region.

In the game, which was played at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water before a large crowd, the Bulldogs took charge midway the first quarter and never looked back.

Things didn't start that way however, as the Patriots struck first scoring in their first possession of the game on a four yard pass play. The two point conversion was good on a two yard pass and Linden led 8 - 0 with 8:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs responded with 4:13 to play in the first quarter when Johnny Lockett ended an eight play 62 yard drive with a 28 yard scamper for a touchdown. A two point conversion attempt failed but the Bulldogs had cut the Patriot lead to 8 - 6.

As the third quarter got underway the Bulldogs continued their torrid pace scoring three times before the period ended. The first of the three came with 9:37 to play in the period when Anthony Landrum rambled 38 yards for a touchdown. Nelson was on target with the extra-point and Sweet Water led 35 - 8. Anthony Landrum picked up the next one as well plunging in from one yard out with 5:32 left to play in the quarter to end a 5 play 40 yard drive. Nelson split the uprights and Sweet Water led 42 - 8.

The last one before the period ended came on the legs of Johnny Lockett as he raced in from 36 yards out with 4:33 left in the stanza. Nelson's kick was true and the Bulldog lead was 49 - 8.

Playing a lot of young people, Sweet Water added one final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Chris Landrum blasted in from three yards out as the clock registered 9:34 left to play. Nelson made it six in a row on extra-points bringing the final score to 56 - 8.

Taking a moment to reflect on his team's performance in the Linden game Coach Stacy Luker had these comments. "I thought we played hard and physical all night," Luker said. "It was a big game for us and our kids sensed the urgency and got themselves prepared to play. We had good effort from everybody but the offensive line play was tremendous."

Looking ahead to this week, things certainly don't get any easier for Sweet Water, as the defending 2A State Champion Leroy Bears are come to Sweet Water to take on the Bulldogs. The Bears who are 4 - 0, like the Bulldogs, are currently ranked number one in 2A and sit atop the 2A Region 1 standings with a 3 - 0 record. "Leroy has a great tradition and their players expect to win every time out just as we do," Coach Stacy Luker said. "They are a well coached team with great size across the front and unbelievable athletes at the skill positions. To say they will be physical is an understatement. After the win we had against them last year I fully expect them to come in here totally focused and playing with a lot of emotion."

The game between the Leroy Bears and Sweet Water Bulldogs is scheduled for this Friday, September 28, at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water. Kick off is set for 7:00 PM.
