The Marengo High School Panthers traveled to Uriah this past Friday, September 21, to take on the J. U. Blacksher Bulldogs in a battle of unbeaten teams. When the final whistle had blown the Panthers found themselves leaving the field for the second year in a row with a one point loss to the Bulldogs. The biggest difference was last season it was the Bulldog offense kicking a last second field goal that proved to be the margin of victory while this time the Bulldog defense saved the day stopping a two point conversion by the Panthers on the final play of the game to preserve the win.

With the win the Bulldogs improved to 3 - 1 for the season and 3 - 0 in region play while the Panthers fell to 3 - 1 and 2 - 1 respectively. It was a tough loss for the Panthers who will have to wait two weeks before they will have a chance to get back on the winning trail again with an open date on the schedule this week. "Naturally we are all disappointed with the one point loss to Blacksher," Panther Coach Scottie Jones said. "We had a chance to win but fell a little short. Things like that happen in football." As Jones continued he praised his troops for their effort. "I felt like our kids put forth a lot of effort in the game and played with a lot of heart," the Panther Skipper said. "I was particularly pleased with the play of the defense and special teams."

Setting the pace for the Marengo offense, which only garnered 120 yards in the game, was Donte Packer with 51 yards on nine carries. Onterrio Woods was next with 39 yards and one touchdown on nine carries while Michael Watkins added 32 yards on 12 carries and Jeremy Bouler picked up 27 yards on five carries. The Panthers failed to gain any yards through the air as quarterback James Bennett was 0 for 3 in the game.

On defense the charge was led by Kaylos Pritchett with 21 tackles including two sacks. Larrence Pritchett was next with 16 tackles and two caused fumbles while Jeremy Bouler recorded 15 stops. Michael Watkins had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and Hakeem Hildreth picked off a Bulldog pass in other big plays by the Panther defense.

In the game, J. U. Blacksher got on the scoreboard first taking a 7 - 0 lead mid-ways the first quarter. The Panthers responded later in the period when Onterrio Woods scampered 20 yards for a Panther touchdown. The extra-point attempt missed the mark but the Panthers had drawn within one at 7 - 6.

The Panthers took the lead in the second quarter when Michael Watkins scooped up a Bulldog fumble and raced 25 yards for a touchdown. Watkins added the two point conversion and the Panthers were on top 14 - 7 as the first half came to a close.

The Bulldogs scored again in the third quarter to knot the game at 14 - 14 as the two teams continued to battle toe to toe much like a couple of heavy weight boxers slugging it out in the middle of the ring.

With the final quarter drawing to a close, the Bulldogs scored what appeared might be the final points of the night to regain the lead at 21 - 14 with only :05 remaining in the game. The never say die Panthers would not go away quietly however and closed the gap to 21 - 20 on the ensuing kickoff when James Dumas took the ball in at his 10 yard line and rambled 90 yards for a touchdown. At that point, the Panthers, going for the win, set up for the two point conversion. For a fleeting second it looked as though the Panthers had pulled it off as Michael Watkins was barreling his way toward the end zone for the two points needed for victory. A desperation shoestring tackle by a Bulldog defender thwarted his efforts however allowing the Bulldogs to hold on to a 21 - 20 win and leaving Panthers inches short of miraculous come back.

After the open date this week the Panthers are scheduled to host the Frisco City Whippets at "The Swamp" on Friday, October 5 in a key region game for both squads. Kick off for the game is set for 7:00 PM
