The story teller comes home
Windham, the story teller who now hails from Selma entertained the audience with her wit and stories of days past. "This just means so much to me to come back here," Windham said. "You see, I love this town' I was first exposed to story telling in this town. I heard the best stories here. For more than an hour, Windham shared her stories of Thomasville's characters like Mally Jackson and sitting with her father as they listened to the stories told by others. "My father told me the four Ls were important, to listen, learn, laugh and love," she said. There were stories of the drive to the right post in downtown Thomasville, and how the street would get so muddy after a rain that the mud would literally take the shoes off your feet. After the rains stopped and things dried out, you could find a collection of shoes on the sidewalk, recovered from the once muddy road. She recalled the days when the power went out in town after the mill shut down for the night. A whistle would blow from the mill warning everyone that the power would be shut off in a few minutes. Gentlemen callers knew it was time to go home then.
Her long-time friend and neighbor, artist Charlie Lucas told a story about fixing her a tomato sandwich in France. "Miss Kathryn gave me an education you can't buy in Wal- Mart," he said. "I'm honored that this lady is seeing the fruits from her tree while she's still living." Windham told the audience she "despised plastic. It's done a lot of wonderful things in this world, but it's a burden to me. I can't unwrap anything." She also told the audience to put down their ipods. "The music of the world is all around us. We've almost forgotten how to listen." ASCC president John Johnson presented Windham with the Alabama Southern Eagle award for her accomplishments. Wrapping up the event, Windham led the crown in playing hair comb kazoos in a rendition of "Amazing Grace" and "When the Saints Go Marching in."
