Water levels still a concern for area The drought we've experienced this year has led to nearly unprecedented low river and lake levels throughout the state. Just this week the U.S. Corps of Engineers decided to limit the flow of water into Alabama from Georgia's lake Allatoona. Gov. Bob Riley has strongly criticized the move. And a Georgia lake has more to do with us than you might think. Water levels are also dangerously low along the Alabama River, our source of water. The Corps and Alabama Power effectively control the flow of the Alabama by controlling the flow out of lakes north of us. And futher reductions in flow are planned throughout the fall. Unless rains come to relieve the situation, flow rates could hit their lowest points in decades.
How that will affect us here remains to be seen. Long term forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate we could return to normal rainfall levels in early 2008.
