Sweet Water downs Leroy again 35-14
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

Anthony Landrum, Scottie Nelson, and Johnny Lockett push forward against Leroy Friday night in Sweet Water.
For the second year in a row the Sweet Water Bulldogs defeated the number one ranked 2A Leroy Bears in a mid-season non-region battle between the two schools. This year the margin of victory turned out to be 35 - 14.

Although most prognosticators figured the game would be a toss-up there were some who gave the Bears a slight edge based on the fact that they believed the Bears would be hungrier after last years' 35 - 6 spanking by the Bulldogs at Palmer Stadium. Apparently no one told the Bulldogs that however, as they raced out to an early 21 - 0 lead reminiscent to last year, in what must have felt like déjà vu to the Bears. The biggest difference this time was the location, with the Bulldogs delighting the home crowd at Nolan Atkins Stadium as they took control of the game early and never let go.

"I thought our guys played hard and gave great effort throughout the game," Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "The shear intensity of the game made for a great atmosphere, one any real football player would want to be a part of. And thankfully we have some real football players wearing the Sweet Water purple and gold."

The Bulldogs seemed to win in all phases of the game; driving more than 70 yards for a touchdown three times on offense; defensively making the Bears one dimensional when they were on offense by holding them to negative yards rushing; and on special teams by blocking a punt for a touchdown. "What else can I say," Stacy Luker said. "It was simply a good team effort against a great football team. I am really proud of them!"

Leading the way on the ground for Bulldog offense that rushed for 163 yards was Anthony Landrum with 65 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Drew Luker was next with 60 yards on nine carries while Johnny Lockett contributed 34 yards on six carries.

In the air Drew Luker had an outstanding night going 7 for 10 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the pass receivers who snagged Luker's aerials was Travis Young with four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown and Antonio Landrum with two catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball Trae McIntosh led the charge for the Bulldogs with 10 tackles and one sack followed by Drew Luker and Deonte Malone with eight tackles each. Damaraquis Williams added seven tackles and a sack while Delano Brewer contributed seven tackles and a blocked punt for a touchdown.

In the game, the Bulldogs drew first blood when Drew Luker teamed up with Antonio Landrum on a 31 yard touchdown pass with 5:17 to play in the first quarter. The extra-point attempt failed but the Bulldogs were out front 6 - 0.

Sweet Water scored again through the air ways a little more than two minutes later when Drew Luker connected with Travis Young on a 17 yard scoring strike. Anthony Landrum plunged in with the two point conversion and the Bulldogs had extended their early lead to 14 - 0 with 3:07 yet to play in the first period.

The Bulldogs continued the early scoring blitz with 1:25 remaining in the first stanza when Delano Brewer broke through to block a Leroy punt and then scooped the loose ball up and rumbled 30 yards for the touchdown. Scottie Nelson tacked on the extra-point and the Bulldogs led 21 - 0.

Leroy cut into the Bulldog lead early in the second quarter when they got on the scoreboard with a 17 yard touchdown pass. The extra-point was good reducing the Bulldog lead to 21 - 7 with 10:31 remaining in the quarter.

Doing just what a good team should, the Bulldogs answered the Bear score just before the first half came to a close when Anthony Landrum plowed in from three yards out with :48 showing on the clock. Scottie Nelson banged the extra-point through and the Bulldogs were on top 28 - 7 as the teams retired to the locker room for intermission.

All the scoring in the second half took place in the third quarter with each team crossing the plain once. The Bulldogs recorded theirs' first when Anthony Landrum pounded his way in from two yards out with 6:17 to play in the third period. Nelson booted the extra-point and Sweet Water had extended their lead once again to 35 - 7.

The Bears would not go away quietly though and scored what was to be their final points of the game with 2:10 remaining in the period. After a three yard run to pay dirt their extra-point try was on the mark closing the gap to 35 - 14.

That's as close as it would get however as the defenses for both teams controlled the final quarter making the final 35 - 14.

Looking ahead to this week the Bulldogs will be playing host to the A. L. Johnson Eagles in a big region match-up for both squads. Sweet Water will enter the contest 5 - 0 over all and 3 - 0 in the region, while A. L. Johnson will come into the game with a 3 - 1 season mark and a 1 - 1 region record. "Our game with the A. L. Johnson Eagles this Friday will be an important game for both teams," Stacy Luker said. "The Eagles always seem to play their best game of the year against us and I fully expect that trend to continue this week. Although they are not overly big they are physical and very fast. As a matter of fact Coach Mose Jones has said this may be the fastest team he has ever had, which is saying something considering how fast they have been in the past. We control our own destiny right now and we can't afford to slip up. We must stay focused!"

The game between A. L. Johnson and Sweet Water is scheduled for this Friday, October 5, at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water with the kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
