The Thomasville Middle School Tigers saw their season record fall to 1 - 1 - 1 this past Monday, October 1 when they lost to the Wilson Hall Middle School Bulldogs 22 - 20.

In the game played at D. F. Anderson Field in Thomasville the lead changed hands four times but it was a two point conversion late in the game that proved to be the difference.

The TMS Tigers got the scoring started at the 6:09 mark of the first quarter when Tyler Hayes capped a 59 yard drive with a 35 yard scamper to pay dirt. The two point conversion attempt failed but the Tigers were on top 6 - 0.

Wilson Hall answered with 2:10 remaining in the first period scoring on a 31 yard run. Their two point conversion attempt also fell short leaving the game knotted at 6 - 6.

The Tigers appeared to be on track to regain the lead early in the second period but came up empty when a fumble at the Bulldog nine yard line rolled into the end zone where a Bulldog defender fell on it for a touchback giving them the ball at the 20 yard line.

From there lightening struck as the Bulldogs scored on an 80 yard touchdown pass to take the lead. The Bulldogs barreled into the end zone with the two point conversion and Wilson Hall led 14 - 6 with 5:01 remaining in the second quarter.

The balance of the first half ended scoreless as the Bulldogs stopped a Tiger drive with a fumble recovery at their 40 yard line while the Tigers' Christian Carpenter picked off a Bulldog pass at the Thomasville 30 to end a Bulldog threat.

As the third quarter got underway the Tigers seemed to be on their way to tie things up, having moved to the Wilson Hall three yard line where they faced a second and goal. The Bulldogs stiffened however throwing the Tigers for two consecutive losses to take over on downs at the Bulldog 12 yard line.

That's when a strange turn of events shifted the momentum back to the Tigers. With the Bulldogs attempting to make a deep hand off, Tiger defensive lineman Deon Russell got penetration into the Bulldog backfield where he stripped the ball from the Bulldog quarterback and rumbled 12 yards for a Thomasville touchdown. Tyler Hayes took the two point conversion in from three yards out tying the score at 14 - 14 with 2:09 remaining in the third period.

After stopping the Bulldogs in their next possession the TMS Tigers launched a 60 yard drive that gave them the lead back when Tyler Hayes rambled in from 19 yards out. The two point conversion fell short but TMS led 20 - 14 with 5:44 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs would not go away however and launched a drive of their own that covered 70 yards and ended with an eight yard touchdown run. They then added the all important two point conversion taking the lead at 22 - 20 with 1:53 remaining in the game.

TMS did manage to move the ball into Bulldog territory in their last ditch effort to win the game but the drive ended when a pass at the buzzer fell incomplete.

The TMS Tigers will be back in action next Monday, October 8 when they travel to Jackson to take on the Jackson Middle School Aggies in the first half of a middle school - junior varsity double header. Game time is set for 5:30 PM.
