The Clarke Prep School Gators, ranked number two in the AISA, made short work of the Senators of Morgan Academy 37-0 last Friday night, giving the school their first ever win at the Selma field and also setting up a showdown this week with top-ranked Bessemer Academy.

The win also assures the Gators a spot in the playoffs, with the seeding to be determined as they play out their other region tilts.

The Gators got the ball when Dillon Rowell recovered a fumble near mid-field.

From there it took just four plays to get to the endzone, highlighted by a 38-yard run from scrimmage by Brett Bradford.

Taylor Becton carried the ball the final 7-yards for the CPS touchdown. Bradford ran in the 2-point conversion with 7:31 left in the first quarter to give the Gators an 8-0 lead.

The defense again set the table for the next score as J.D. Powell intercepted a Senator pass near the Gator 40-yard line.

Again it took just a few plays to cover distance and Becton was called on to cap the drive as he lowered the boom from 2-yards out. Powell powered in for the 2-point conversion and the lead was 16-0 with 7:13 to play in the second quarter.

Clarke Prep's defense forced a punt on the ensuing possession and the offense took the field with just over two minutes to go before the break.

Powell rifled a 43-yard touchdown pass and run to Chad Dickinson to increase the advantage. Hunter Mayton converted the PAT and the Gators had a 22-0 lead going into halftime.

The Gators had the ball first in the third quarter and they posted a classic Wing-T drive that covered 63-yards in nine plays. Tanner Tucker sprang free and ran 27-yards to cap the drive. Mayton tacked on the PAT, making it 30-0 with 7:32 to go in the period.

Heath Bishop intercepted a Morgan pass from his linebacker position to give Clarke Prep the ball at the Senator 20- yard line.

Two plays later Becton scored on a 6-yard run to end the drive. Mayton kicked the point-after touchdown, making it 37-0 with just :12 seconds left in the third period.

Neither team was able to mount any drives in the fourth quarter and the Gators won the region contest 37-0.

Bradford led all rushers with 148 on 14 carries. Becton added 93 yards on 17 carries and three scores. Tucker had 38 yards on six carries and TD.

Powell was 6-of-8 passing for 81 yards and a score.

Dickinson caught four passes for 69 yards and a score.

This Friday night the Gators (6-0, 5-0) step out of region play to host the Bessemer Academy Rebels.

Bessemer enters the game as the top-ranked team in the AISA, and as the defending state champs. Clarke Prep is the second-ranked team.

Game time at Hamilton Field is 7 p.m.
