OBITUARIES

William Rentz Barkley

William Rentz Barkley, 81, of Nashville, Tenn., died Monday, October 1, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Barkley was born March 20, 1926 in Selma. He was the minister of music at Forest Hill Baptist Church in Franklin, Tenn., where he was a member. Mr. Barkley was a Navy veteran of World War II.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, at O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Linden with the Rev. Ed Rose and the Rev. James Nichols officiating. Burial was in Linden Memorial Park.

Mr. Barkley is survived by one brother, Donald Barkley of Linden; one sister-in-law, Nell T. Barkley of Linden; three nephews, Jack Barkley, Dennis Barkley and Mitch Barkley, all of Linden; and one niece, Rubye Coleman of Hope Hull.

Pallbearers were Jack Barkley, Dennis Barkley, Mitch Barkley, Will Barkley, Ron Morgan and Billy Coleman.

Sharon Deniese Cowan

Sharon Deniese Cowan, 37, died September 25, 2007.

Ms. Cowan was a member of the Kiel Memorial Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Morvin and later moved her membership to the Givenland C.M.E. Church in Bashi.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at Kiel Memorial Temple C.O.G.I.C. with Elder Terry Ball, Sis. Ada Taylor and the Rev. Clarence Lucious officiating. Burial was in Givenland C.M.E. Church Cemetery in Bashi.

Ms. Cowan is survived by three children, Justin Cowan, Jessica Cowan and Prentis Cowan; her mother Minnie V. Cowan of Morvin; five sisters, Joann (John) Smith, Janet and Erica Cowan, Barbara Smith and Rosetta (Mark) Black of Morvin; and three brothers, William (Antwonette) Cowan Sr. of Putnam, Alfred Cowan and Willis (June Bug) Smith of Morvin.

Pallbearers were Anthony Watkins, Cotrie Cowan, Bobbie Pritchett, Adolph Cowan, Earnest Watkins Jr., Roger Watkins, Alvin Cowan and MacArthur Cowan.

David Pitts Holley

David Pitts Holley, 87, of Linden, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis.

Mr. Holley was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Pisgah. He was a retired forestry consultant and a member of Linden Baptist Church.

The funeral was held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, with Dr. Jerry Gunnells and Dr. Randy Creel officiating. Burial was in Linden Memorial Park.

Mr. Holley is survived by four sons, James (Carolyn) Holley of Monroeville, Edwin (Ruth) Holley of Clayton, Wayne (Lora) Holley of Monroeville and Keith (Becky) Holley of Demopolis; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Holley was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Holley.

Pallbearers were Jeffrey Holley, Jason Holley, P.J. Holley, Derek Holley, David Holley, Austin Holley and Logan Holley.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Linden Baptist Church Building Fund in Linden.

Eva Gray Lockett

Eva Gray "Beatta Mama" Lockett, 75, died Friday, Sep - tember 21, 2007, at 10:15 p.m.

Mrs. Lockett was born Aug. 3, 1932 to Sam and Minnie Lewis. She was a member of Faith Temple Holiness Church of Dixons Mills were she served faithfully in many church auxiliaries.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at Rockbabylon M.B. Church in Dixons Mills with the Rev. Norris Pauley - pastor, Minister Terry Lewis and Sister Rosalind S. Dunning officiating. Burial was in Polly Robinson Cemetery in Dixons Mills.

Mrs. Lockett was preceded in death by her husband, Ozzie D. Lockett; two children Ozzie D. Lockett Jr. and Carolyn Lockett Watkins; four sisters; and two brothers.

Mrs. Lockett is survived by nine children, Annie (Robert) Gamble of Sweet Water, Lola L. Blanks of Banning, Calif., Minnie Johnson of Thomasville, Josie (Charles) Lucy, Evelyn Boykins, Barron (Arlie) Lockett and Johnny (Rosa) Lockett, all of Sweet Water, Minister Michael (Connie) Lockett of Banning Calif., and Sgt. Marvin (Elsa) Lockett of Indianapolis, Ind.; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Ola Lockett of Dixons Mills; one sister, Geraldine Jones of Philadelphia, Pa.; 46 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; a cousin, Rosie Mae Dunning of Mobile; and three devoted friends, Gennie Pugh of Dixons Mills, Georgia Young of Sweet Water and Tassie Green of Thomasville.

Nellie Gray West, 79, died Tuesday, October 9, 2007.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, Oct. 13 at New Hope #1 Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomasville.
