Sunny South woman guilty Mary Tate of Sunny South was convicted of manslaughter last week in the stabbing death of her husband, Michael Tate. Tate was arrested on New Year's Day, 2006 after her husband was found by other family members. Michael Tate was taken to Southwest Alabama Medical Center for treatment of multiple stab wounds, but was pro- nounced dead upon arrival. Michael Tate was 46 years old. Mary Tate, who was 49 at the time of the killing, was charged with murder at the time of her arrest. Jurors deliberated for two hours following the trial, coming to the manslaughter verdict. During the trial, the defense claimed Michael Tate, a stroke victim, was taking medication that made him violent.
Ruby Hunter, Michael Tate's aunt, thanked the Wilcox County DA "for not letting her walk completely free."
