Would you be ready?

Colby Myers and Malcolm Moore
No one was prepared for the catastrophe that developed on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. But now, thanks to a camp developed by the Alabama Department of Homeland Security, the youth of Alabama are being prepared for when disaster might strike again. The camp, Be Ready Camp, in Huntsville, teaches children timely survival skills in the event of future disastrous situations.

Two middle school students recently attended Be Ready Camp during this year's week of Sept. 11. Sixth grade students Malcolm Moore and Colby Myers were selected to participate in the Be Ready Camp by Thomasville Middle School Principal Terry Norton and Counselor Carolyn Taylor. These students were taught basic leadership skills that would enable them to successfully maneuver through an emergency. Skills such as first aid, underwater rescue and mock disaster drills were highlighted during the week.

Students participating in the event were given call signs or code names. Moore was called Grizzly and Myers became Rambo. Grizzly and Rambo were given backpacks that contained tools of survival such as hard hats, gloves, first aid kits and medical awareness book.

Moore said of his experience, "I enjoyed the experience, but I wasn't really prepared for the seriousness of the exercises."

Myers added, "I would love to go back and be a part of Be Ready Camp again. We learned things that most adults don't even know!"

Anyone wishing to participate in future Be Ready Camps should contact Clarke County EMA Director, Roy Waite.
