Bulldogs hammer A.L. Johnson 59-0
In the game the vaunted Bulldog offense racked up 462 yards of offense including 389 yards on the ground while the stingy and relentless defense held the visiting Eagles to only 21 yards of total offense. It was all Bulldogs from the get go with the offense picking up three touchdowns on only four snaps and the defense recovering a muffed punt snap in the end zone to give Sweet Water a four touchdown lead after the first quarter. "We got out of the gate early," Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "We took control of the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball from the opening whistle on and dominated play through out. Our defense in particular was great, not allowing them a first down until mid-way the third quarter. It was a good region win for us!"
Over on defense the Bulldogs were led by Drew Luker with 13 tackles followed by Tyrice Lockett and Devin Wolf with nine tackles each and Delano Brewer with eight. Cordaryl Curtis added a fumble recovery for a touchdown as well. The Bulldogs got their scoring barrage started at the 10:13 mark of the first quarter when Anthony Landrum rambled 49 yards for the first of three touchdowns he would pick up during the evening. Scottie Nelson tacked on the extrapoint and Sweet Water led 7 - 0.
Anthony Landrum picked up touchdown number two with 5:44 to play in the first period when he galloped 46 yards to pay dirt. Nelson's kick was on target this time and Sweet Water had extended their lead to 20 - 0. The Bulldogs went to the air for their next score with Drew Luker hooking up with Scottie Nelson on a 52 yard bomb for the touchdown. After catching his breath Nelson added the extra-point putting the Bulldogs out front 27 - 0 with 3:41 yet to play in the opening quarter. With the Bulldog defense continuing their absolute domination of the Eagle offense in the second quarter just as they had in the first, Sweet Water's offense put one more touchdown on the board with 6:33 to play in the second quarter on a 6 yard scamper by Anthony Landrum. Nelson's extra-point try was no good this time but the Bulldogs had increased their lead to the 33 - 0 margin they would take to the locker room with them at halftime. Although many of the starters were taking a breather as the second half got under way the Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the first half with Johnny Lockett taking the opening kick off back 85 yards for a touchdown. Nelson split the uprights with the extrapoint and Sweet Water suddenly led 40 - 0 with 11:44 remaining in the period. The added to the lead again at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter when Damaraquis Williams plunged in from three yards out. Nelson drilled the extra-point and the Sweet Water lead stood at 47 - 0. Chris Landrum was the next Bulldog to strike gold waltzing in from 11 yards out with 6:01 still showing on the third quarter clock. Nelson's extra-point try missed the mark but the Sweet Water lead had grown to 53 - 0 at that point. The fourth quarter proved to be pretty uneventful with the Bulldogs giving as many young players as possible some quality playing time while eating up the clock. They did manage to add one more score with 3:58 remaining in the game when Cordaryl Curtis broke loose and raced 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt by Nelson was again no good making the final score 59 - 0. The Bulldogs, who will be off this week, will try to regroup a little bit before what they hope will be a stretch run into the playoffs. They will be back in action in two weeks when they hit the road to take on the South Lamar Stallions in another key regional game. "Our open date is coming at a good time for us," Coach Stacy Luker said. "It will give our players with nagging injuries some time to heal and the rest of us time to get our legs back under us. The game with South Lamar will be an important one. We will be playing for a chance to clinch the region championship and I want us to be hitting on all cylinders when we meet them."
The game between South Lamar and Sweet Water is scheduled for Friday, October 19, at J. C. McAdams Field in Millport with kick off set for 7:00 PM.
