Thomasville JV shuts out Jackson JV 23-0
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Thomasville High School Junior Varsity Tigers followed the lead of the TMS Tigers this past Monday, October 8, when they shut out the Jackson High School Junior Varsity Aggies 23 - 0, to make it a clean sweep by the Tigers over the Aggies.

In the game, which was played in Jackson, the Tigers scored all of their points in the first half and then relied on their defense to keep the Aggies in check the second half.

The action got started with the Tigers getting the ball first after Jackson won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Thomasville couldn't get anything going in their first possession and punted to Jackson after three downs. The Aggies found the going tough as well and went three and out on their first series punting the ball back to the Tiger 21. From their the Tigers began a methodical march that ate up the balance of the first period and produced the first touchdown of the night when Sean Skelton connected with Kendarius Spears on a 26 yard scoring strike at the 7:12 mark of the second quarter. Harrison Lewis added the extra-point and Thomasville led 7 - 0.

After the two teams exchanged punts again on their next possessions, the Aggies appeared to have something going on their third possession of the game as they moved the ball from their 25 up to near mid-field. The Tiger defense stepped up at that point with Jamarcus Blackmon intercepting an Aggie aerial near the Thomasville 40. The only problem was Blackmon lost control of the ball after being hit by the Aggies fumbling the pigskin near at the 45. That's where the old tip drill paid off with Rayshawn Cairl being Johnny on the spot plucking the ball out of the air and racing down the sideline to the Aggie one.

David Foster blasted in then from the one to record the Tigers' second touchdown with 3:09 to play in the second period. Harrison Lewis was on target with the extra-point and Thomasville led 14 - 0.

The opportunistic Tigers were not done though and followed up on another Rayshawn Cairl interception less than a minute later to pick up their third touchdown of the night. It was the same combination that worked magic for the Tigers' first score with Sean Skelton throwing a 20 yard strike to Kendarius Spears this time as the second quarter clock registered 1:29 to play before halftime. Harrison Lewis' extra-point was blocked leaving the Tigers on top 20 - 0.

As fate would have it the Tigers were presented with another scoring opportunity before intermission when the Aggies fumbled on the first play of their next possession giving the ball back to the Tigers at the Jackson 30.

With time quickly slipping away the Tigers tried to get it in the end zone one more time before the teams broke for halftime but found themselves just outside the Aggie 10 with :04 remaining. The decision was made at that point to go for a field goal. Harrison Lewis came on and nailed a 27 yarder to increase the Tiger lead to 23 - 0 as the first half came to a close,

As noted before, the second half was basically a defensive struggle with neither team garnering any points. The highlight of the second half had to be the stand the Tiger defense made on the Aggies first possession of the half. After driving the ball 60 yards to the Thomasville 10, the Aggies appeared to be on their way to their first points of the game with a first down and goal at the 10. The Tiger defense would have none of it however and steadily drove the Aggies backwards on the next four plays taking over on downs at the Thomasville 33.

Thomasville sealed the shut out when Tim Morrissette intercepted an Aggie pass on the last play of the game. With the win over the Aggies the Tiger JV improves to 2 - 1 on the season.

The Tiger JV will be back in action on Monday, October 15, when they host the Monroe County Junior Varsity in a game set to begin at 6:00 PM. They will end their season a week later on Monday, October 22, when they play the Demopolis High School JV in the second game of a Middle School - JV double header that begins at 5:30 PM
