The Clarke Prep School Gators jumped out of the gate in a hurry but faltered as they lost 41-13 to top-ranked Bessemer Academy last Friday night at Hamilton Field.

The game pitted the top two ranked teams in the AISA against each other in a battle of two of the best teams in Class AAA.

Clarke Prep took the opening possession and marched through the visiting Rebels on a 56-yard drive.

Quarterback J.D. Powell tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Chad Dickinson early in the first quarter.

Hunter Mayton tacked on the point-after touchdown and the Gators had a 7-0 lead with 9:37 left in the frame.

Bessemer needed just three plays to answer when Garrett Pinciotti flipped a 60-yard scoring strike to Brandon Heavens. The attempt was blocked by Tanner Tucker and Clarke Prep held onto a 7-6 lead with 8:17 left in the first.

The Gators took the ensuing possession and went to work again, cutting a path through the Bessemer defense, but the drive stalled at the 9-yard line as CPS turned the ball over on downs.

Four plays later the Rebels hit paydirt when Pinciotti hit Quintin Hill with a 40-yard touchdown pass. Jeremy Cox ran in the 2-point conversion to give BA a 14-7 lead with 1:26 to go in the first period.

Bessemer then reeled of a 37-yard TD pass to Heavens, a 36-yard TD run and a 4-yard TD run from Cox to increase their lead to 34-7 as the first half came to a close.

The Rebels extended their lead when Cox broke free on a 40-yard run on the first play of the third quarter. T.J. Barr kicked the PAT, making it 41-7.

The Gators scored the game's final points when Randy Nichols broke free on a 23-yard run midway through the fourth quarter. The try for two came up short, leaving the final score 41-13.

Powell was 7-of-21 passing for 97 yards and a score to lead the Gator offense.

Taylor Becton paced the ground game with 68 yards on 11 carries. Brett Bradford added 59 yards on 15 carries.

Dickinson caught four passes for 53 yards and a score.

The Gators (6-1, 5-0) look to get back into the winning column this week when they host Cottage Hill (6-1, 4-1). The Gators can all but lock up the region title with a win over the Warriors. Clarke Prep still has Hooper on the region slate as well as their regular season finale with Jackson Academy before the idea of playoffs can be discussed.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Hamilton Field.
