Gaining or losing, it depends on your view The two were Thomasville landmarks, and now, they are no more. There are many who will mourn the passing of the old Alabama Grill, though it lives on in some way just a ways down the road at Gaston's Grill. And while work will begin shortly to place a very different building at that location, a short drive down Front Street shows millions of dollars being spent to renovate and repurpose the old Thomasville High School, keeping most of the building's façade and building a bigger better theater in its center. While the high school building has quite a bit more history behind it, both places hold memories and engender passion for many who call Thomasville home and for many who have since moved away. What saves one building while another makes way for something new? Sometimes that answer comes down to economics, and sometimes politics. Of course, that wasn't the original Alabama Grill building in the first place, and we imagine there were some folks who felt strongly about the other buildings there. So, what's progress and what's not? Hard to say sometimes.
As Thomasville grows and changes, there will likely be more stress points as we deal with what stays and what does not. No one can say with certainty what is right or wrong in these matters, but hopefully we will be able to strike the best possible balance between the two as we move forward.
