Monroe historic tour deadline is Oct. 19

Anyone interested in Monroe County can learn more by visiting its historic places and visiting sites not accessible to the public Tuesday, Oct. 23 during the Monroe County History Tour, presented by the Monroe County Heritage Museums.

The tour will include:

• Burnt Corn - Lowery's Store and Burnt Corn Baptist Church.

• Uriah - King-Garrett Home, Old Bank, Post Office and site of the Blacksher Store.

• Perdue Hill - McConnico Cemetery and Alabama Masonic Lodge No. 3; the oldest public building in Alabama and the William Barrett Travis House , home of the hero of the Alamo before he went to Texas.

• Claiborne - Fort Claiborne Marker and Dellet-Bedsole Plantation Marker. This farm is on the National Register.

• Franklin - Davis Ferry at Haines Island Park - the original Gee's Bend Ferry.

• Bell's Landing/Hybart - Bell's Landing Methodist Church.

• Vredenburg - The old lumber mill town.

• Beatrice - Robbins Hotel - a favorite stop between Selma and Pensacola on the L&N Railroad. This hotel is now on the National Register.

The tour will leave the Old Courthouse Museum in Monroeville at 8 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. Seating is extremely limited and reservations must be in by Oct. 19. The cost is $20 per person. Bring a sack lunch.
