Cane syrup to flow at restored cane mill Beatrice - The restored sugar cane mill at beautiful Rikard's Mill Historical Park will once again produce cane syrup. At 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, the syrup-making demonstration will begin when "Mac" the mule is harnessed to the cane mill, which grinds the sugar cane into juice. The all-important syrup pan that once belonged to W.J. Campbell, a well-known syrup-maker in the Pine Hill are, will be used thanks to the generous donation by his daughter and son-in-law, Mabel and Danny Averitt, of Yellow Bluff. Around noon, the freshly squeezed juice will be boiled down at the syrup furnace and later bottled for purchase. History enthusiasts, as well as families, are invited to observe how old-fashioned cane syrup is made, then stay and tour the 1845 water-powered grist mill, stock upon cornmeal and grits and enjoy fresh biscuits with syrup as an afternoon treat. For lunch, local south Alabama barbecue will be available from Clark's Barbeque of Monroeville. Rikard's Mill Historical Park is located 22 miles north of Monroeville, just north of Beatrice off of Highway 265. Driving south on I-65, the mill is approximately 35 miles west off of the Greenville - Pineapple exit. Admission to the event if $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children.
