Clarke Prep falls to Cottage Hill 20-16

The Clarke Prep School Gators took a hard 20-16 loss this past Friday at the hands of Cottage Hill in Grove Hill at Hamilton Field.

The Warriors took their opening possession and scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass. The added PAT gave Cottage Hill a 7-0 lead with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

A fumble on the first play on the ensuing Clarke Prep drive led to Warrior points as the recovered the loose pigskin in the end zone for a TD. The conversion failed but Cottage Hill had a quick 13-0 lead with 7:54 left in the quarter.

The Gators answered that score as they drove 71-yards in 11-plays with quarterback J.D. Powell calling his own number on a 6-yard run.

Hunter Mayton kicked the PAT, cutting the lead to 13-7 with 2:31 left in the first frame.

In the second quarter the Gators were able to knot the score as Taylor Becton exploded for a 20-yard touchdown run.

It capped a 3-play, 63-yard drive.

The attempt hit the left upright, leaving the score at 13- 13 with 8:08 to go before halftime.

In the closing minutes of the frame Cottage Hill added a 6- yard TD run. With the PAT the Warriors had a 20-13 lead going into halftime.

Clarke Prep took the opening possession of the second half and drove down to the Warrior 14-yard when the drive stalled.

Mayton came on booted a 31-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 20-16, early in the period.

Clarke Prep got the ball back in the fourth quarter and drove down to the Cottage Hill 26- yard line before a fumble ended the drive.

They had one more chance in the period but turned it over on downs and Cottage Hill took home the 20-16 region win.

The Gators fall to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in the region. They are tied with Cottage Hill and Fort Dale in determining the region race.

Clarke Prep hosts Hooper while Cottage Hill travels to Fort Dale.

The region title will be determined following this week's game.

The Gator's game with the Colts kicks off at 7 p.m. at Hamilton Field.
