State officials praise CCDF
By Arthur McLean Editor

Gerald Dial
Former state Senator and current executive director of the Alabama Rural Action Commission Gerald Dial told the Clarke County Development Foundation members that, "you are doing exactly what governor Riley wants people to do across the state."

Dial praised the foundation last week and the county's proactive mayors, saying he wished he would transplant them.

The theme of working together to create a better life repeated itself among the night's speakers during the CCDF annual meeting held in Fulton this year.

"I still go into those areas where there is that bitter competition - where some mayors won't even talk to the other," Dial said. "If they do, their constituents won't vote for them."

Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks also spoke at the meeting reiterating the theme of regional cooperation. Sparks also touched on his desire to save farming in Alabama, and the need to develop alternative fuel production in the state. "That's the technology we have to bring forward in this state," Sparks said.

"A lot of times when us folks from Montgomery come down here in pin-striped suits…we think we know more than the folks we're coming to visit," he said. "It's pretty obvious that we don't know more than you do about rural development."

Sparks also presented Fulton mayor Mike Norris with a plaque recognizing him as a "Rural All-Star."

CCDF chairman Steve Green reported to the members that the foundation has made substantial progress over the past year. "We started on a journey to make this county better, and that train has left the station," he said. Reports from the foundations various activities were also presented.

The foundation has become an active participant and driving force behind such programs as the new pre-school HIPPY assistance program for families, literacy programs and is supporting a wireless internet initiative in the county.

Four new foundation board members were selected: Roy Waite, Michelle Orwig, Mary English, and Leta Stephens.
