The Thomasville Tigers played host to the Southside of Selma Panthers this past Friday, October 19. When the final whistle had blown in the game, the Tigers walked off the turf at D. F. Anderson Field with a 31 - 20 victory. With the win the Tigers clinched the Region 1 title improving their season mark to 7 - 1 and their region record to 6 - 0. By clinching the title the Tigers are assured of being a host team in the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs which begin in three weeks.

"I am proud of our guys for clinching the region championship Friday," Tiger Coach Jack Hankins said. "We did what we had to do and beat a very athletic football team. I thought our special teams did a good job overall. Our kick coverage and punt block teams had especially good nights and Cameron Dunegan had his best game yet kicking off."

The Thomasville offense, which accumulated 325 total yards in the game, was led on the ground by Delvonte Harris with 49 yards rushing and one touchdown on seven carries. Following him were: James White with 45 yards on seven carries; Alex Buford with 29 yards on three carries and Roya Campbell with 23 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

In the air Alex Buford, who was filling in at quarterback for the injured Daniel Rogers, was 7 for 14 for 161 yards with one touchdown and one interception. On the receiving end of Buford's passes were; Tysean Thompson with five catches for 140 yards and one touchdown, Delvonte Harris with one catch for 22 yards and Kenny Sanders with one catch for nine yards.

Over on defense the Tigers were led by Katrell Watters with 11 tackles while Roya Campbell and Jarrell Watters added eight apiece. Joining them five stops each were Courtney Campbell and Josh Jackson while Mitchell Cowan added four. Cowan and Jarrell Watters each added a sack to their numbers while Courtney Campbell picked up an interception.

In the game the Tigers won the toss and elected to defer to the second half giving Southside the ball first. Following the opening kickoff the Panthers, running out of the spread offense, moved down the field quickly and appeared ready to take the early lead but a fumble at the Thomasville one rolled into the endzone where the Tigers fell on it for a touchback.

Neither Thomasville nor Southside were able to get anything going on their next series as the respective defenses stepped up forcing punts.

Thomasville's second possession of the game showed some promise as the Tigers put together a couple of first downs and were threatening inside the Panther 20 yard line. The drive stalled at the 13 yard line however with the Tigers turning it over on downs at that point.

At that point it was the Tiger special teams that got the Tigers ignited. Following the Tiger defense shutting down the Panther offense on three downs and forcing a punting situation, the Tiger's punt rush was so intense the Southside punter was unable to get the ball off giving the Tigers the ball at the two yard line.

From there the Tigers were in the endzone in one play with Roya Campbell barreling in from two yards. There was a bad snap on the extra- point attempt causing it to fail but Thomasville led 6 - 0 with 11:29 to play in the second quarter.

The Tiger defense continued their relentless play on the Panthers' next possession stopping them after three plays forcing yet another punting situation. Once again the Tiger special teams came up big, partially blocking the punt this time allowing the Tiger offense to start at the Southside 46.

The Tiger offense struck quickly again when Alex Buford completed a 44 yard pass to Tysean Thompson on first down putting the ball at the Panther two yard line. Roya Campbell got the call again and bulled in from two yards out giving the Tigers their second touchdown of the night. Delvonte Harris added the two point conversion and the Thomasville lead was 14 - 0 with 8:39 remaining in the second quarter.

The Tigers struck again at the 2:24 mark of the second quarter when Alex Buford connected with Tysean Thompson on 75 yard bomb. Harrison Lewis added the extra-point and Thomasville was out front 21 - 0.

Thomasville was able to add to their lead one more time before the half ended when the Panthers' punter stepped out of the back of the endzone giving the Tigers a safety. Facing a fourth and 10 from their five yard line and the clock stopped at :17 Southside attempted to punt the ball out but a high snap drove the punter beyond the end line causing the safety. With the additional two points the Tigers led 23 - 0 as the first half came to a close.

The Thomasville offense, hitting on all cylinders, picked up where they left off as the second half began. Starting at their 30 following opening kickoff, the Tigers drove seventy yards to pay dirt scoring on a 22 yard scamper by Delvonte Harris with 7:09 to play in the third period. Harrison Lewis' extrapoint attempt sailed wide left leaving the Tiger lead at 29 - 0.

Thomasville's final points of the game came early in the fourth quarter when the Panthers, once again backed up inside their 10, had trouble with a punt snap resulting in another safety. With the additional two points the Tiger lead was 31- 0 with 10:24 remaining in the game.

With Thomasville substituting freely at this point the Panthers scored three times in the fourth quarter. Their first points came on a five yard run with 5:02 left in the game. The two point conversion attempt failed putting the Thomasville lead at 31 - 6.

The Panthers closed the gap to 31- 14 at the 2:24 mark of the final period scoring on a 65 yard pass and converting on a two point conversion.

The final score came with :15 remaining on a one yard run. The two-point conversion failed making the final 31 - 20.

Looking ahead the Tigers will be celebrating homecoming this week when play their final region game of the season against the Monroe County Tigers. Monroe County, like Southside, will be running out of the spread offense something the Thomasville defense has had trouble with at times this season. "We still need to get better at defending the spread offense," Coach Jack Hankins said. "Monroe County will challenge us with it this week. We also need to refocus on blocking and tackling better. There were times last week we didn't do either particularly well."

The game between Thomasville and Monroe County is scheduled for Friday, October 26, at D. F. Anderson Field with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
