Wreck on Hwy. 43
Two drivers were injured Monday afternoon in a collision on Highway 43 South of Grove Hill. The accident occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the 72-mile marker (near Southern Taxidermy, south of Tompkins Baptist Church) Betina Johnson, 26, of Thomasville, was traveling north in the car shown when she lost control and swerved across the lanes into a truck (in the background) driven by Christopher Washington, 39, of Mobile, going south. Her 2005 Nissan hit the diesel tank of the 2006 International truck, but not all the fuel spilled out, according to witnesses at the scene. Johnson was transferred to Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. The truck driver was transferred to Jackson Medical Center. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Traffic backed up quickly in both directions and the highway remained closed until about 6:30 p.m. due to debris and diesel fuel on the roadway. The Clarke County Sheriff's Department, State Troopers and EMA officials responded to the accident.
