Thomasville mauls Monroe 63-0
In the game the home standing Tigers racked up 296 yards on offense while the defense held the visitors to only 70 total yards and forced eight turnovers. Leading the charge for the Tigers' stifling defense was Mitchell Cowan with six tackles followed by the trio of James Jones, Jarrell Watters and Kattrell Watters with five stops each. Josh Jackson added four tackles and had a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Alex Buford, Travis Foster and Brady Sullivan also contributed one interception apiece to the effort with Sullivan returning his for a touchdown. Over on offense the rushing leaders for Thomasville were; Delvonte Harris with seven carries for 83 yards and one touchdown and James White with five carries for 56 yards and three touchdowns. Others who contributed to the attack were; Roya Campbell with16 yard and one touchdown on three carries; Evander Davis with four yards and one touchdown on one carry; David Foster with 16 yards on two carries; Tevin Pope with 29 yards on six carries; and Charles Taylor with 23 yards and one touchdown on three carries.
Things got underway with Thomasville winning the coin toss and electing to defer to the second half thus giving Monroe County the ball first. The visiting Tigers were unable to generate anything on their first possession of the game and were forced to punt to Thomasville. On the punt Alex Buford took the ball in at mid field and raced down the sideline for an apparent touchdown. The play however was called back for a block in the back at the Monroe County 36 giving Thomasville the ball at the visitors 46. Thomasville board in short order from there when James White scampered in from 33 yards out with 9:26 to play in the first quarter. Harrison Lewis added the extra-point and Thomasville led 7 - 0.
The Thomasville defense continued their relentless pursuit of the Monroe County offense on their next possession shutting them down on three plays and forcing a punt. The pressure from the Thomasville rush was so intense the Monroe County punter skied his kick giving Thomasville the ball at the visitors' 22. Delvonte Harris took care of things from there sprinting 22 yards to pay dirt. Cameron Dunegan added the extra-point this time and Thomasville led 21 - 0 with 2:09 yet to play in the first stanza.
The boys from Monroeville seemed to finally have a spark of life on their next possession picking up one first down before an Alex Buford interception at the 42 stopped the drive and giving Thomasville the ball back with another short field to work with. The Thomasville offense took advantage of the situation punching it in with 8:40 to play in the second quarter. Evander Davis got the honors this time darting in from four yards out. Cameron Dunegan boomed the extra-point and the Thomasville lead was 35 - 0. With the visiting Tigers pinned deep following the ensuing kickoff, the Thomasville defense got in on the scoring when Brady Sullivan picked off a pass at the 10 yard line and waltzed into the endzone. Harrison Lewis was back for the extra-point attempt and stayed on target giving Thomasville a 42 - 0 lead with 7:40 to play in the second quarter. Monroe County's deep back muffed the ball on the following kickoff and Thomasville recovered it at the 26 yard line. Then Thomasville pounded it in again from there with Roya Campbell diving in from one yard out to complete the short drive. Harrison split the uprights again and Thomasville had increased its lead to 49 - 0 with 6:37 remaining in the second period. Thomasville did manage to score one more time before intermission. It was the defense getting in on the act again with linebacker Josh Jackson scooping up another Monroe County fumble and rambling 40 yards for the touchdown. Cameron Dunegan tacked on the extrapoint and the Thomasville lead was 56 - 0 with 2:42 to play in the first half. Despite substituting freely throughout the second half, Thomasville did score one more time before the game ended when Charles Taylor scooted in from 15 yards out with 7:51 to play in the game. Harrison Lewis kicked his fifth extra-point making the final 63 - 0. In his review of the game, Tiger Coach Jack Hankins had nothing but good things to say about his charges. "I thought we played well in the game," the Tiger Coach said. "We had one of our best weeks of practice all year leading up to the game and it carried over into Friday night." Looking ahead to this week and the Tigers' will be hosting the undefeated Clarke County Bulldogs in the annual renewal of one of the more intense rivalries in the state. "We have a big task ahead of us this week," Tiger Skipper Jack Hankins said. "Clarke County has a very good football team. They are very strong and talented on both sides of the ball and have dominated almost all of their opponents this season. We will need to have another good week of preparation and play one of our best games to defeat them."
The latest rendition of the rivalry between the Thomasville Tigers and Clarke County Bulldogs, which dates back to 1917, is scheduled for Friday, November 2, at D. F. Anderson Field with the kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
