T'ville Christmas parade on deck for December 1
By Arthur McLean Editor

It's time once again to begin the preparations for Thomasville's annual Christmas Parade that will take place Dec. 1.

"Each year the parade gets bigger and better," said Edmon McKinley chairman of the parade. McKinley and the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce invite all area businesses to participate in the parade.

To make the parade theme more consistent and improve safety, some changes have been made for this year's parade.

"We're instituting a parade permit system this year," McKinley said. "All entrants will be required to pick up a permit and they will have to have their permit to participate."

Another change this year is that parade participants that wish to have music playing must play Christmas-themed music this year.

A third change requires all riders in vehicles to sit completely inside the vehicle throughout the parade route. "We want the parade to be a safe and fun event for everyone," McKinley said.

The theme for this year's parade is "Christmas Books."

"Gina Wilson at the Thomasville Library has been a huge help this year in getting a selection of Christmas books in the library for those who would like to consult them for ideas and inspiration," he said.

The Chamber will have the only official Santa Claus this year, riding on the fire truck.

The cost to participate is $15 and should be paid at the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce office no later than Nov. 30.

Books recommended for ideas include: Frosty the Snowman The Twelve Days of Christmas A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The Christmas Shoes by Donna VanLiere The Polar Express

It's Christmas! by Kathryn Tucker Windham Twas the Night Before Christmas A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote How the Grinch Stole Christmas A Charlie Brown Christmas A Snowy Day The Redneck Night Before Christmas Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Skipping Christmas by John Grisham Christmas Gift by Ferrol Sams

Christmas decorating contest

This year the chamber is also asking the merchants of Thomasville to decorate their businesses for the holidays in one of two categories, Traditional Christmas or Creative / Fun. Traditional could be with Santa, Elves, Snow scenes, Religious scenes etc..; Creative / Fun could be using the type of business you are in to decorate (such as tires for a tire store), Characters, Toys, Trains etc.., as long as it is family friendly. If your business is not downtown or on Hwy 43 and you would like a spot downtown to advertise your business please call the chamber office and it will assign you an area downtown.

"We are also sponsoring a contest for the best decoration in each of the above categories. Merchants can pay a $10.00 entry fee, pick up contest entry form at the chamber office and return them by November 30th to participate in the contest," said Marlo Anderson, chamber director. " Your business will be judged by judges from out of town and a prize will be awarded in each category. All decorations to be judged must be visible from the street."
