Pioneer Day is Saturday

A variety of old-fashioned fun is planned at the Clarke County Museum's Eighth Annual Pioneer Day scheduled Saturday, Nov. 10 on the museum grounds in Grove Hill. The free event, held on the Museum grounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature costumed re-enactors demonstrating what life was like for this area's early settlers.

Among the event's new demonstrators are blacksmiths Jay and E. Miller who will be forging old-fashioned squared headed nails, horse shoes and other metal implements for visitors.

Festival-goers will also be treated with tours of the newly restored Josiah and Lucy Mathews Cabin which was moved to the museum complex and restored this year. This will be the first opportunity for visitors to take a look at the early 1800s structure, and re-enactors in period costume will portray the Mathews family.

Sam Dale, hero of the Creek War, will also be on hand to tell visitors stories from Alabama's early frontier.

Admission to Pioneer Day is free. The Clarke County Museum is located at 116 West Cobb Street, just off U.S. Highway 43 in Grove Hill.
