Bitter finish for MHS Panthers The A. L. Johnson Eagles scored two late touchdowns this past Friday, November 2, to defeat the Marengo Panthers 20 - 6 in the final regular season game for both teams. With the loss in the game, which was played at "The Swamp" in Dixons Mills, the Panthers saw their season come to an end with a 4 and 5 record. Posting the win, the Eagles on the other hand, finished the regular season with a 6 - 3 record and will enter the AHSAA State Playoffs this week as the third seed from 1A Region 4. As the third seed they will be traveling to Florala to play the Wildcats who are the 1A Region 2 runner ups. In last week's game between the two cross-county rivals the Panthers recorded 258 yards of offense in the losing effort with 240 yards coming on the ground. Leading the rushing attack in the game for the Panthers was Corey Noid with 109 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. Following him were: Kaylos Pritchett with 55 yards on six carries; Demetrius Craig with 25 yards on three carries; Anthony Kennedy with 20 yards on one carry; and Donte Packer with 11 yards on three carries. In the air James Bennett was 2 of 6 for 18 yards while Anthony Kennedy attempted one pass without a completion. On the receiving end of Bennett's two completions were James Dumas with one catch for 12 yards and Michael Watkins with one catch for six yards. Over on defense the Panthers were led by Kaylos Pritchett and Quintin Watkins with 12 tackles each followed by Jeremy Bouler, Devante Lewis and Larrence Pritchett with 10 stops apiece and Brian Rowden with nine. In the game A. L. Johnson got on the scoreboard first scoring on a long reverse in the first couple of minutes of the game. Their extra-point attempt failed but the Eagles led 6 - 0. The Panthers answered the score on their first possession of the game when Corey Noid scampered in from 19 yards out. Just as had been the case with the Eagles, the extra-point attempt failed knotting the score at 6 - 6 still early in the first quarter. Things stayed that way through the next two periods as the defenses for both sides took charge in the game. It wasn't until late in the fourth quarter that the deadlock was broken with the Eagles scoring twice in the final minutes of the game to claim the 20 - 6 victory.
Despite the loss, Coach Scottie Jones felt like his Panthers had some things to be proud of. "I was pleased with the effort of our players in the game with A. L. Johnson," Coach Jones said. "I felt like our intensity was good all night but our opponents were able to make some plays late and we didn't. I want to thank our seniors for their hard work and dedication this whole year. We will miss them and their leadership next year. As for the rest of the squad, I believe all of them see the things we need to do to get better for next season. I want to challenge them to work hard in the classroom and in our off season program. If they do, with the experience we have returning I have no doubt that we will be an improved team next season."
