The Sweet Water Bulldog offense continued its torrid pace racking up 510 total yards in its 68 - 7 win over the Providence Christian Eagles in the first round of the AHSAA State Playoffs this past Friday, November 9. While the vaunted wing-t offense was scoring quickly and often the Bulldog defense was doing its part as well holding the Eagles to 154 total yards including only 69 on the ground. "Going into the game I felt it was important for us to get off to a good start and take control early," Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "There's no doubt we did just that, scoring 20 points in the first quarter and dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides. I was proud of our offense in that the first unit scored on every possession. As for the defense we held a team that had been averaging over 300 yards rushing a game to only 69. I was also pleased that we had no turnovers and cut down tremendously on our penalties. In the playoffs there are three things that are critical if you want to advance, cutting out turnovers, limiting penalties and playing great defense. Friday night we did all three."

In the game, played at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 20 - 0 lead in the first quarter, extended it to 47 - 7 by half time and then coasted to the 68 - 7 final.

Offensive leaders in Bulldog rushing attack, which recorded 420 yards, was Anthony Landrum with 200 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. He was followed by Jeremy Landrum who rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns on two carries.

In the air Drew Luker was 4 of 5 for 94 yards with two touchdowns. Heath Hill and Antonio Landrum led a quartet of receivers with one catch apiece with Hill taking his one reception 43 yards for a touchdown while Landrum took his in from 24 yards out.

On the defensive side of the ball Delano Brewer and Devin Wolf led the charge with 16 tackles each followed by Drew Luker with 13 stops. In other big defensive plays Brewer, Antonio Landrum and Damaraquis Williams all had one interception.

The Bulldogs got the scoring barrage started at the 6:57 mark of the first quarter when Anthony Landrum scampered 38 yards for the first of four touchdowns he would garner in the course of the game. Scottie Nelson's extra-point attempt was no good but the Bulldogs led 6 - 0.

Sweet Water added to their lead less than two minutes later when Johnny Lockett broke loose and sprinted in from 21 yards out. Scottie Nelson's extra-point attempt was good this time and the Bulldog lead was 13 - 0 with 4:46 remaining in the opening period.

The Bulldogs were not done in the period, picking up their third score with :27 remaining, when Drew Luker hit Antonio Landrum with a 24 yard scoring strike. Nelson boomed the extra-point through and the Sweet Water lead had increased to 20 - 0 as the first quarter came to a close.

With the Eagle defense seemingly unable to even slow down the Bulldog offense the onslaught continued in the second quarter with the Bulldogs adding to their lead again at the 7:48 mark of the quarter when he waltzed in from 22 yards out. Nelson's kick missed the mark but Sweet Water moved out to a 26 - 0 lead,

Damaraquis Williams got in on the act next, barreling in from six yards out with 5:33 to play in the second stanza. Nelson got back on track with this extra-point attempt and the Sweet Water lead had been in creased to 33 - 0.

It was back to Anthony Landrum on for the next touchdown as the big tailback rambled 55 yards for score. Nelson split the uprights again and the Sweet Water lead had risen to 40 - 0 with 2:32 yet to play before halftime.

The Eagle offense, which had a hard time all night getting untracked against the Bulldog defense, finally got things going enough to get on the scoreboard with :25 to play before intermission. The touchdown, which came on a 12 yard pass and was followed by an extra-point attempt that was good, cut the Bulldog lead to 40 - 7.

Unlike what some teams might have done the Bulldogs didn't simply ride out the final seconds of the first half but used the fleeting seconds to answer the Eagle score. Taking it down the field in a hurry the Bulldogs picked up their seventh touchdown of the night on the final play of the first half when Anthony Landrum dove in from two yards out. Nelson's kick was true and the Bulldog lead was 47 - 7 as the teams retired to the locker rooms.

The third quarter, pretty much like what the first and second quarters had been, belonged to the Bulldogs. Sweet Water got things started early with a 43 yard touchdown pass from Drew Luker to Heath Hill 11:12 to play in the third quarter. Nelson was on target and the Bulldogs led 54 - 7.

With Sweet Water substituting freely at this point, Jeremy Landrum was the next Bulldog to strike pay dirt scooting in from 23 yards out with 4:57 remaining in the third period. Randy Jackson tacked on the extra-point and the Sweet Water lead was 61 - 7.

It was the duo of Jeremy Landrum and Randy Jackson rounding out the scoring for the night as the third quarter wound to a close. Landrum picked up his second touchdown of the quarter and the game, racing 49 yards for the score with :03 left. Jackson made it two for two on extra-points and Sweet Water was on top for good at 68 - 7, with the fourth quarter ending scoreless.

Next up, the 10 - 0 Bulldogs will be on the road to face the 9 - 2 St. Jude Pirates who as the number three seed from Region 3 surprised a number of people when they defeated the McIntosh Demons, the runnerup in Region 1, 30 - 14 in their first round match-up. "The St. Jude Pirates, in one sentence are so talented they are scary," Coach Stacy Luker said. "They are very athletic on both sides of the ball and will use that athleticism to gain an edge. On offense they will spread the field and try to isolate their skill people to put pressure on the defense. To help them do that, they have two receivers who are 6' 3" and 6' 4" that are not only fast but have great leaping ability. On defense they are very physical and run to the ball well. They will be a challenge for us but we are excited about the opportunity to play them."

The game between the Sweet Water Bulldogs and the St. Jude Pirates is scheduled for Friday, November 16, in Montgomery with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
