Money's still tight for school system
By Arthur McLean Editor

The Thomasville Board of Education heard a financial report that shows the school system is now not keeping a fund balance that meets the minimum required by state regulations.

The school system's fund balance for the end of the 2006-2007 school year was $448, 052 which is below what the state requires for this system by $139,440.

CFO Linda McGhee said the two biggest contributing factors to that shortfall were the continued lack of tax money from Boise Cascade, and a refund of tax payments to the county revenue commission of $106,000.

School spending came in under budget by $9,619, but local revenues for the year decreased by $221,769. With the amount the school system had to refund in overpayments from the county, the school system saw a drop of $329,461 in local funding this past year.

The school board hears informative presentations on the school system's special education programs and its school improvement program.

In other business, the board approved a 10 percent increase in the contract with Flowers Bakery to provide bakery products to the schools. The increase was tabled from last months' meeting after board member Kevin Smoker questioned the increase.

The board also approved the school improvement plan for 2007-2008.
