The Thomasville Tigers piled up 532 yards of offense on their way to a 58 - 34 victory over the Fayette County Tigers in the second round of the AHSAA State Playoffs last Friday, November 16, at D. F. Anderson Field in Thomasville. Caught up in an offensive shootout between Fayette County and themselves in the first half of the game, the Tiger defense turned things around in the second half holding the high powered Fayette offense to -25 yards rushing and only one score in the final two periods. "I was proud of the way our offense played all night," Thomasville Coach Jack Hankins said. "Our defense played well at times in the first half but really stepped it up in the final two quarters. Fayette County had one of the best offenses we've seen all year and being able to limit them in the second half was big for us. I also thought we were very physical on both sides of the ball all night."

Leading the Thomasville ground game which accounted for 392 yards was Delvonte Harris with 220 yards on 16 carries. James White was next with 76 yards on seven carries while Roya Campbell had 61 yards, one touchdown, and two - two point conversions on nine carries and Alex Buford had 44 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

In the air Alex Buford was 9 of 13 for 140 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Leading the way on the receiving end of Buford's passes were: Tysean Thompson with three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns; Kenny Sanders with two catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns; and Shed Simmons with two catches for 15 yards and one touchdown.

In the kicking game Cameron Dunegan was 5 for 5 on extra- points while Harrison Lewis was 1 for 1. Dunegan also had two punts in the game for 30 yard average.

Over on defense Jarrell Watters led the charge with eight tackles followed by Alex Buford, Courtney Campbell and James Jones with seven apiece. Roya Campbell and Josh Jackson came in next with five tackles each. In other big defensive plays Jackson had three sacks while Jones had one and a half and Tacory Marshall had one. Marshall also caused a fumble that was recovered by Mitchell Cowan. In the interception department the Campbell brothers Courtney and Roya had one each.

Things got started with Thomasville wining the opening coin toss and electing to defer to the second half, giving Fayette County the ball first. After a short return the visitors from north of Tuscaloosa set up shop at their 15 yard line.

On the second play of the series the Fayette County tailback fumbled and an alert Mitchell Cowan fell on the loose ball setting Thomasville up at the Fayette County 35. From there the home standing Tigers made the turnover pay dividends taking it in for their first score of the game. A 15 yard touchdown pass from Alex Buford to Tysean Thompson finished the short drive off with 8:40 remaining in the first quarter. Cameron Dunegan added the extra-point and Thomasville led 7 - 0.

Fayette County answered the Thomasville score on their next possession driving 63 yards for the touchdown. The actual scoring play was somewhat unique in that the visiting Tigers initially completed a pass that appeared to have been stopped at the five yard line but ended up in the endzone when the initial receiver fumbled and a teammate of his caught it in mid air and darted in. Fayette County ran the two point conversion in and with 7:45 to play in the quarter Thomasville trailed 8 - 7.

The homestanding Tigers bounced right back on their next possession driving 66 yards for a second touchdown. Alex Buford culminated the drive with another scoring pass play, hooking up this time with Kenny Sanders on a 34 yard strike. Cameron Dunegan was on the mark with the extra-point and Thomasville had regained the lead at 14 - 8 with 5:48 left in the first period.

The Thomasville lead was short lived however as Fayette County marched right back down the field on their next series, scoring on a six yard pass with 2:23 remaining in the first stanza. A run for the two point conversion was good and Fayette County led 16 - 14.

Neither team could add to their point totals on their next series with Thomasville being forced to punt after three downs and Fayette County turning it over on downs after coming up short on a fourth and three at the Thomasville 23.

Thomasville did manage to put something together after the big defensive stop driving 77 yards to pay dirt. Once again it was Alex Buford taking care of business, this time with his legs, as he completed the drive with a 16 yard jaunt to the end zone. Roya Campbell blasted his way in with a two point conversion and Thomasville was up 22 - 16 with 7:58 to play in the second quarter.

The fans on both sides had hardly gotten seated again when the Fayette County special teams came up with a big play, returning the ensuing kickoff to the Thomasville two yard line. From there they punched it in tying the score at 22 - 22 with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter. Their two point conversion was stopped short leaving in that way.

Thomasville appeared to be on their way to taking the lead again on their next series only to see the threat end with an interception at the Fayette County 23. With the momentum momentarily shifted back their way Fayette County then launched a 77 yard drive that ended in with a seven yard touchdown run to put them in the lead again. The Thomasville defense stopped the two point conversion attempt but Fayette County led 28 - 22 with 2:03 yet to play in the second quarter.

Starting at their own 35 following the kickoff, the Thomasville offense seemed to put things in high gear pounding their way back to the endzone again. It was Alex Buford hitting Kenny Sanders with a 23 yard touchdown pass that completed the drive. Cameron Dunegan tacked on the extrapoint and Thomasville was back on top 29 - 28 with 1:28 left until intermission.

As fate would have it, Thomasville found themselves with one more opportunity to score less than a minute later when Roya Campbell intercepted a pass and returned it to the Fayette County 28. From there the opportunistic Tigers took advantage of the turnover when Alex Buford fired a 23 yard strike to Tysean Thompson in the corner of the end zone with :15 showing on the first half clock. Roya Campbell barreled in with the two point conversion and Thomasville took a 37 - 28 lead to the locker room.

As good teams so often do, Thomasville scored on their first possession of the second half when Alex Buford waltzed in from 15 yards out to culminate a 60 yard drive. Cameron Dunegan nailed the extra-point and with 10:51 remaining in the third quarter Thomasville had extended their lead to 44 - 28

The score would remain that way until early in the fourth period, when Thomasville added to their lead again on Alex Buford's fifth touchdown pass of the game. Shed Simmons was Buford's target this time as they hooked up on a 12 yard score. Cameron Dunegan's extra-point split the uprights and the Thomasville lead stood at 51 - 28 with 11:18 remaining in the final period.

Fayette County would not go away and scored one final time on a 25 yard pass with 9:21 left in the game. Thomasville stopped the two point conversion again but the lead had been cut to 51 - 34.

Just for good measure Thomasville scored once more with 7:20 to play when Roya Campbell rumbled in from 10 yards out. Harrison Lewis added the extra-point making the final 58 - 34.

As the 10 - 2 Tigers move into the quarter finals of the playoffs this week they will be matched-up with the 11 - 1 Handley Tigers who were the Region 3 champions this season. Handley beat the Trinity Wildcats 28 - 14 this past Friday to advance to the quarterfinals. "We will be facing a very good Handley football team this Friday," Coach Jack Hankins said. "They are big, fast, and physical on both sides of the ball. Offensively they are run oriented and will line up and play smash-mouth with anyone. Over on defense it is pretty much the same way, they employ a 4 - 3 defensive scheme that will be tough to block. Needless to say, we will have our hands full."

With school out because of the Thanksgiving Holiday, a pep rally has been scheduled for 6:00 PM in the stadium. "We need all of our fans to come out early and be very vocal Friday." Coach Hankins continued. "Our guys really feed off the support of our fans. The larger and louder our crowd is, the better they seem to play."

The game between the Thomasville Tigers and the Handley Tigers is scheduled for Friday, November 23, at D. F. Anderson Field in Thomasville, with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
