Bulldogs pull away from Pirates 52-12
In the game, the Bulldog offense racked up 524 total yards once it was able to quit stopping itself with turnovers while the defense was able to hold a very talented and explosive Pirate offense to only 284 total yards. "I was disappointed with all the turnovers and penalties we had in the game," Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "Our failure to take care of the ball kept St. Jude in the game emotionally through the first half. Thankfully we responded well and showed some maturity in the second half or it could have been a long night for us." Leading the way for the Bulldog rushing game which accumulated 492 yards in the game was Anthony Landrum, who rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries. Damaraquis Williams was next with 113 yards and one touchdown on only four carries. In the air Drew Luker was 2 of 4 for 32 yards with one interception. Damaraquis Williams caught both of Luker's passes for 32 yards.
The game started off slow with neither team being able to put any points on the board in the first quarter as the play of both defenses and turnovers played havoc with any offensive thrusts. Things began to pick up a little in the second quarter as the Pirates broke the ice scoring on a 70 yard run with 9:52 to play in the period. The extra-point try was no good but the Pirates led 6 - 0. The Bulldogs answered later in the quarter driving 48 yards for the score. Anthony Landrum picked up the touchdown with 3:28 remaining in the quarter when he blasted in from two yards out. Scottie Nelson added the extra-point and the Bulldogs had taken a 7 - 6 lead that they would take with them to the halftime locker room. The Bulldogs began to show some their usual spark as the third quarter got underway. Anthony Landrum got things rolling in a big way as the rambled 67 yards to pay dirt on Sweet Water's second play from scrimmage in the second half. Nelson's extra-point attempt was blocked but the Bulldog lead had been increased to 13 - 6 with 11:01 remaining in the quarter. Damaraquis Williams was next to get in on the fun racing 70 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the Bulldogs' next possession. Nelson's extra-point was off the mark again but the Bulldog lead stood at 19 - 6 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter. Fearing the game could be slipping away, the Pirates rallied to score later in the period on a 59 yard pass play. The extra-point attempt was no good but the Bulldog lead had been cut to 19 - 12 with 4:21 remaining on the third quarter clock. It was at that point that the Bulldogs showed the Pirates what a genuine wing-t offense looked like, executing an 82 yard drive that consumed the balance of the third quarter and culminated with a two yard touchdown plunge by Anthony Landrum with 11:55 to play in the fourth quarter. Nelson's string of near misses continued on the extra-point but the Sweet Water lead was 25 - 12. That score by Landrum early in the quarter started a blitz by the Bulldogs that saw them completely dominate the final period effectively eliminating the Pirates. It was Anthony Landrum who grabbed the second score of the quarter as well when he scampered in from 45 yards out with 9:09 to play in the game. Nelson was on target this time and the Sweet Water lead was 32 - 12. The defense grabbed the spotlight next when Antonio Landrum picked off a Pirate aerial and took it back 10 yards for a touchdown. Nelson drilled the extra-point and the Sweet Water lead had climbed to 39 - 12 with 7:58 still remaining in the period. A fumble recovery by Tyrice Lockett put the Bulldog offense back in business a few seconds later. Anthony Landrum then made the turnover count when he picked up his fifth touchdown of the night a minute later waltzing in from 10 yards out. Nelson tacked on the extra-point and with 6:58 to go in the game the Bulldogs were on top 46 - 12. It was sophomore Jeremy Landrum that got the final points of the night for the Bulldogs when he raced 70 yards for a touchdown with 4:23 remaining before the final whistle. His score was set up by a Drew Luker interception that got the ball back for the Bulldog offense. Nelson's extra-point try missed the mark leaving the final at 52 - 12. With the win the Bulldogs move to 11 - 0 on the season and will be matched up with the 11 - 1 Wadley Bulldogs in the quarter finals of the playoffs this week. Wadley, who defeated the Brantley Bulldogs 21 - 20 last week to advance to the quarter finals, finished the regular season as the Region 3 runner-ups. "Wadley is a team that has been flying somewhat under the radar all season," Coach Stacy Luker said. "They have won eight in a row now after losing to a good Maplesville team early. They are a well coached team that is big and physical up front and whose goal it will be to take control of the line of scrimmage. They are also blessed with some very good skill people that they will be counting on to be play makers."
The game between the Sweet Water Bulldogs and the Wadley Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday, November 23, at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water with kickoff set for 7:00 PM
