Two drug arrests over the week

Two drug arrests were made by Clarke County deputies over the past week.

On Thanksgiving day, Nov. 22, Investigator Ron Baggette was leaving Thomasville, headed south, when he noticed a maroon Saturn traveling 85 miles per hour, also headed south.

As they got closer to Grove Hill Baggette called Grove Hill Police Officer Royce Kelley for assistance in stopping the vehicle.

Tommie Lee Chestnut was stopped at Highway 43 and Clark Street in Grove Hill. Chestnut gave the officers consent to search his vehicle and Narcotics Investigator Jim Mundie brought canine unit Capon to aid in the search. They were also joined by Deputy Patrick Champion.

Capon alerted on the driver's side door, between the front seats and the floorboard of the back seat. Officers found two rolled blunts between the front seats and a child's sippy cup containing a green leafy sub- stance, believed to be marijuana, on the back floor board. A metal container with small plastic bags in it, two sets of scales used for weighing narcotics, and instrument used for placing narcotics in the plastic bags were also found.

Further search revealed a David Industrial .380 caliber handgun and $803 in small bills known as a "Doper's Roll."

Chestnut was charged with possession of marijuana, first degree, certain persons forbidden to carry a pistol and drug paraphernalia use/possession.

Deputy Mark Leon and Reserve Deputy Travis Mathews were on routine patrol Nov. 24 when they noticed a car parked on a dirt drive just north of McVay Road in Jackson, with only one parking signal working.

The driver, James Clinton Harris was asked to exit the vehicle. He was asked for permission to search the vehicle and gave his consent, telling officers if anything was found it wasn't his.

The two passengers, Mary Elizabeth Ott and Leslie Deryl Ott were also asked to exit the vehicle.

The search revealed open beer containers, a tote bag containing a four inch pipe and packing rod, used to smoke crack cocaine or methamphetamine and razor blades. Another pipe was found in the vehicle as well as several pill bottles, containing medication, with the labels partially torn off.

Harris was charged with drug paraphernalia use/possession, DUI of controlled substance and unlawful possession of controlled substance.

The Otts were charged with drug paraphernalia use/possession.
