Richerson uses her passion to help Marengo cheerleaders accomplish their goals

Ashley Richerson of Sweet Water became a member of the Alabama A&M University cheerleading squad on April 7. She currently holds the title of co-captain for the 2007-08 year as a sophomore.

Ashley began cheering at the age of 8 as a tiny mite cheerleader for Marengo's Pee Wee football league. That is when Ashley discovered her passion. She cheered for pee wee until she was old enough to join the Marengo High School squad in Dixons Mills in 2001 under Emma Weathersby.

Ashley earned the title as captain in 2002 and remained head until her senior year in 2006 under Vanessa Brown.

As a freshman Ashley made up her mind and set a goal to become a collegiate cheerleader. She started to make preparations for her future by taking extra classes at a local cheer gym and worked during the summers as a staff member at Black Belt Cheer Camp to gain experience.

During the summer of 2007 Ashley returned to her Marengo High School and volunteered her services to the MHS cheerleaders. With Ashley's help, the cheerleaders won second place in the cheer competition at summer camp.

Ashley acknowledges God for her success with cheerleading and school as she currently maintains a 3.75 gpa.

"Determination and hard work is the key," she said. "If you believe in yourself you can achieve all your dreams."

Ashley is the daughter of Norman and Jackie Richerson of Sweet Water.
