New art show at Black Belt Treasures Artist Cynthia Dahlstrom, a Greenville resident, will exhibit a new collection of work at Black Belt Treasures on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1. The public is invited to meet the artist on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the gallery located at 209 Claiborne Street in historic downtown Camden. Dahlstrom has been strictly a clay artist for the past 25 years but most recently she has begun to paint. This collection of work will reflect her love for clay as well as her new interest in paints and other mediums. During the last year, her art has become a spiritual expression similar to the folk art of the early 19th century. She has embraced the primitive style of iconography created by the Santeros of that era. She is a self taught artist who feels a close connection to the earlier folk artists who created devotional art for the altars of small village churches and homes. Dahlstrom strives to create her retablos (means "behind the altar") paintings in the spirit of the old saint makers using a naive painting style guided by the inspiration of their art. Dahlstrom's work is not restricted to one medium. She happily uses a combination of clay, wood, paint, glass and metal …whatever it takes to create what her heart desires. Many of her more recent creations also reflect a connection to her Swedish heritage. She has created guardian angels that evolved from Norse mythology stories passed down through her family. These beautiful angels are a combination of clay, wood, copper, pastels.
Visit with Dahlstrom and learn more about her passion for devotional folk art at the gallery show on November 30th. The complete collection of work will be available in the gallery through Monday, December 3.
