Obstacles are for a purpose
Spiritual Reflections
Pat Ozment Jr. IMB Missionary to Ghana
IIt had become my practice to teach perched on the front of a table in the classroom, rather than seated behind it, preferring that vantage point.

Tuesday during my second class I called for a 5-minute break and as the students left the classroom I propelled myself off the table, in the process I sprained my left ankle.

I was in intense pain, and the ankle was swelling, but I managed to finish the lecture when the students returned. By that afternoon it was obvious that I would not be able to go anywhere the next day and my classes would have no teacher.

As it turned out I had to stay home all week, and I was some put out about it. Mostly I was put out with God. You know He is in charge and He is sovereign, and He controls everything. It seemed to me that He was off the mark to some degree, because anyone could see that I needed to be in school teaching. Instead I was stuck at home.

Funny thing, while I was stuck at home, our wireless broadband internet connection which had been dead, suddenly started working, so Peggy and I spent two days ordering much needed books for the seminary, from Life Way in the states, and then I spent more time on the computer working with Cheryl Read in Texas on a plan to send the books free to Ghana via a privately owned 737 that was scheduled to come here on business.

By the end of the week I was amazed at how much had been accomplished, and it all happened because God allowed me to sprain my ankle. Sometimes I forget that it is God who allows obstacles, and that if we look to Him, the obstacles will become opportunities. In Acts 16 Luke tells us that Paul and his missionary team wanted to go to Bithynia and preach the gospel, but the Holy Spirit would not let them, and a vision appeared to Paul in the night, calling them to Macedonia. As a result Paul and Silas were imprisoned and the Philippian jailer was saved.

If you get handed a lemon, instead of a peach, try making lemonade, and I'll see you in church.
